Wildfires in central Oklahoma / MWC and Choctaw, etc

Postby oklahomajewel » Thu Apr 09, 2009 8:34 pm

Thanks for Warpony and Kajamelu4 for checking on me!!! I'm fine, I live in the city part of Midwest City and the fires started this afternoon on the eastern edge of MWC. First heard about the Chandler / Wellston fires and a coworker lives there - hope she's okay.

It's about 8:30 pm and approx 100 homes have burned to the ground and destroyed. The winds are still gusting to 60 mph. Many many areas were evacauted. My friend and hairdresser, she lives in Oakwood East and at least 20 homes burned in there so hope she's ok.
My best friend Susan has negatives and important papers packed and her elderly neighborhood... they evacuated a square mile right close to her , she's out in the country by Draper Lake.

I've been online checking with school friends etc that have relatives here and appreciate everyone's concern. !!!

I know Jeff (Warpony) said he heard about it on the weather channel!

Just pray for a still to come to the winds and the strength and stamina of our firefighters... they are getting ready to send other depts from other towns for relief thru the night.

Julie

My family was in the sooner run and we have found stories of the women being left at the homesteaded land while the men went to register. There would be massive fires blowing across the land. Those Okies are a determined bunch.

Wasn't it about 10 years ago when that tornado tore thru OK City?

I think it's time to crawl into your fraidy hole! Stay alert!

Julie-
Glad things are missing you. There was a fire about 3 miles west of here, not as big as some of the others. If this wind would just settle down! Just be ready to scoot if you need to! We've got room if you need it!

When my grandma was a kid her family came from Kansas in a covered wagon to Okla, it was a couple of months before the land run, (Sooners) and they claimed land close to Tulsa by the Arkansas river. Great Grandma fended off claim jumpers, outlaws and the hid from the law while grandpa was waiting for the claim office to open.... Or so the story goes

Please don't whip me...I didn't do it. I don't even smoke anymore so no one could accuse me of flicking a butt outta the window. 8) I just heard there is rain on the way for this weekend.

Julie, glad you are safe. Gene's brother and niece have homes in Choctaw but haven't been able to find out anything as yet. I sure hope all are safe down there and this fire gets controlled real soon.
