Mad Jack, I think the best way is to take 287 to Amarillo
Take exit 75 & Go South on Lakeside Street ( Texas loop 335) for about 10 miles
Take exit for South Washington (FM 1541)& go South about 10 more miles
Turn left on TX 217 for about 6 miles. 217 will end at Palo Duro Canyon gate.

Brenda & Mike, thanks for doing name tags

See you all soon Ed

Madjack,
:? :? Yes I did say HOLLAR....

I agree with Ed on the directions. That would be the best way to get there. If you are coming sometime during the day on Thursday and you get lost, you can always call one of us.... unless we are down in the canyon...........lol Any business along I40 can also give you directions.

Madjack,
I would definitely take the cutoff at Claude, going west on 1151 then south on 1541 (these are two-lane blacktops, farm-to-market roads). You can cut 40 miles and an hour in traffic off your trip that way.

287 will bring you through Clarendon.

Going home you might take 207 back down along the edge of the Cap and go through Silverton -- that'll take you by Caprock Canyons State Park. There's a nice little park close to Quanah, too: Copper Breaks.

Google "Palo Duro Canyon: US 287" for a visible map. The link below works with Ubuntu and Firefox.

you might call the parks line (check www.tpwd.state.tx.us first for available sites at both parks just in case, first) and see which of those parks has better sites open for your trip home ;)

School's not out yet here, so Sunday nights most of the parks are pretty empty.

We are going to be there.

Postby Cindy » Wed May 13, 2009 6:42 am

Dave, Tyler, and I will be there on Saturday morning. We won't be able to get there till 11pm or so on Friday so have rented a room in Amarillo for Friday night. We will see you for breakfast Saturday.

Everyone make sure you do not speed going thru Estelene on hiway 287. They write a lot of tickets in that town. Todah got one last year and I believe it was quite expensive. Be careful everyone.

I think I took the Claude route last year. That's where my GPS told me to go.

Of course, you don't want to miss Amarillo. Stop and get a giant steak, eh?

...thought about it...I think I could handle the 5# steak(if my dentures could hold out) but the giant baked tater and giant salad would be a wash :?

Madjack-
If you are gonna try the big one at the Big Texan, please let me know. That would probably be worth the 8 hour drive just to watch. Well, we'd have to have dinner while there too!

Wish I could make it to this gathering.....but not this time. One of these days life should slow down.......right?
