Throughout the extended top kill procedure – which may take up to two days to complete - very significant changes in the appearance of the flows at the seabed may be expected. These will not provide a reliable indicator of the overall progress, or success or failure, of the top kill operation as a whole. Update on Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill - 29 May BP started the "top kill" operations to stop the flow of oil from the MC252 well in the Gulf of Mexico at 1300 CDT on May 26, 2010. Despite successfully pumping a total of over 30,000 barrels of heavy mud, in three attempts at rates of up to 80 barrels a minute, and deploying a wide range of different bridging materials, the operation did not overcome the flow from the well.Full Press Release

How to Read the BP SpillCam
Most of the time, there is an information section at the top of the screen. Always check the date and time (see image below) to see if you’re viewing a live feed or a taped segment.

Now that the top kill operation is underway, BP has switched to a different ROV camera for its live feed. (See below) While some of the on-screen information is different, the date and time are still there. Across the top is a compass heading showing the direction of the view. The depth is in the top-right corner, and the subject, in this case, Monitor Valves on BOP, is center-bottom.
