Location of weigh scales

Postby aggie79 » Wed Jun 06, 2012 8:00 pm

Well, I've been swapping out the license plate from my utility trailer and my teardrop for sometime now. It's time to get the teardrop registered. Does anyone know of a truck scale in the northeast Tarrant County area?

Thank you,
Tom

Tom, not sure how for this is from you but it's on the north side of Ft Worth at least;

Pilot Travel Center
(I-35 Exit 65)
2400 Alliance Gateway
Fort Worth, TX 76177
Phone: (817) 337-5324

they have it listed that there is a certified CAT scale at this location. It's the closest one I could find in my apps for the big 3 chains. Next closest I saw was a TA Travel Center out in Denton.

Tom - most scrap metal places have scales as well. That's where I get mine weighed - just pull up on the scales - disconnect - get it weighed - you're done!

You can weigh it at several places, the dump, etc. When I had my trailer titled and tagged, TX required a certified weight so I went to a CAT scale at a local truckstop. Just tell them what you are doing before you get on the scale. They will direct you and tell you what to do.

Thank y'all. I don't have any excuse to not get our teardrop registered now.

Are you gonna go for a trailer tag or a travel trailer tag with a title?

Thomas,
I haven't decided yet, but I think I'm just going to get it registered as a trailer - no title.
Take care,
Tom

:ok: Cool. Smart move here in TX, I think some other states it might be a bigger deal, but I don't feel you would ever have a problem here. Oh, the woman that I sold the LT to sent me back the license plate the other day, so I can just renew the registration on it once I get my new teardrop built! 8)

Last I registered a trailer here in TX - for a homemade trailer I didn't have to declare a 'certified' weight - I just went with an estimated weight. Thought I suppose the rules may have changes in the past few years.

I can't recall the exact weight, but I remember there was some kind of extra crap you had to go through of the trailer (or capacity) was over 1500# ( I think). They did not require a certified weight for me either, but I did make sure to tell them it was under that amount. Man, I am not being helpful at all LOL...

Tom - I had only one camper that was titled with an RV tag. it can be done and is not at all a complex process - but it does have to be weighed and inspected - and by inspected - I mean every year thereafter by an inspection point that certifies RV - In other words - if your specifically going to tag it as an RV and have some REASON for doing so - then go for it - otherwise register it as a trailer and skip the annual inspection fees

Wow, I did not realize you needed tags AND inspection just like a car. :? Good call on the trailer-only decision Tom! I'd get it weighed just for fun tho!

Good advice. Before I was leaning toward not going the RV route. After all the good comments I'm definitely not going the RV route.

I think it's over 4000lbs capacity requires the extra paperwork - I have my boat/utility trailer registered for 1000 pounds empty weight/2500lbs carrying capacity/3500lbs gross weight. I'm pretty sure all they wanted from me was a check for the funds.
