Cream Can Junction Idaho Oct 1-5th

Postby Wolffarmer » Sat Sep 05, 2020 9:39 pm

Another of my campouts. I only call them I do little more.

Oct 1-5th or when you get tired or have to go home.

Where. Cream Can Junction, north of Minidoka Idaho.

How to get there, go east of Minidoka about two miles and turn north on the road that says "Desert Road" Or something like that. About 20 miles north is Cream Can Junction. I think it was still marked last June. But signs have a way of walking away out there. I am planning on turning west about 1/4-1/2 miles to some low hills/bluffs and camping on the east side of those. If some sheep person is not there already. If that is the case I will find some place that you will run on to me and my white Casita trailer. ( Betty White ) The road is not to bad to Cream Can Junction. At least it wasn't in June. Warning. a mile or so north of the Rail Road there is a stop sign on the down slope of the gravel road. Can be exciting. About the first 4 miles could be harvest trucks. I do not consider them very well maintained and many drivers are on the sketchy side, I should know I have driven many loads in them. After that it is a desert road.

What to do. Split Butte, Bear Trap Cave, Crystal Ice Cave, Pillar Butte, Baker Indian Cave. That road that George wants to drive. Could take the Arco-Minidoka road the rest of the way to Arco, Get a milk shake and come back. Blue Dragon. Sparks Well. Mountain biking.

What to bring. Probably will not be very cold, or very rainy. Expect wind. I would not expect conditions to be good for an open fire. So plan accordingly. No gas to buy in Minidoka. I have 2 Coleman stove top ovens. Want to have pie?

Of course there is no facilities out there. I can park Betty so it blocks some wind and put up my awning. I finally figured that out this summer. I could even bring a generator. 2000 watts. I have two and a paralleler but have never used that.

What do you think?

Event is long enough some could come for a day or two if that is all they can do. Or take.

Wow, did not even think this one was that close. Time flies.

I should be a go for the trip. I will have to look at the maps and put together some routes.

Tempting, but 600 mile plus round trip for me. Also that time of year, weather is a concern. Good luck with it

This will be my 4th 600+ mile trip this year come rain, shine, hot or cold. I think we even ran into some flurries. That is what makes the adventure...

I've already committed to a Bears Ears trip for October. The date for it is up in the the air right now. Possibly things will work out for both. Right now it's wait and see.

The last Mordor trip I was also wondering under what circumstances the intersection got its name as we drove through the intersection.
A word search for "Cream Can Junction, ID" come up blank other than references to maps.

I went right to it on Google Earth. It has been called that since I been going out there at least 30 years ago.

I just tried it on Google Maps and it found it. But I would not use the route it preferred. Adds a lot of gravel and a lot more mixing it up with farm harvest traffic. Go east from Minidoka on the pavement about two miles and turn on the Desert Road sign.

I do not know how it got its name but probably something with a sheep herder or cow poke is involved

Interesting. It must have had that name when I was chasing sagebrush fires there fifty years ago.

I'd love to come, but life's been crazy. I got a promotion to Boise and am well into buying/selling homes. We actually close on both on the 5th and will be moving stuff that weekend. Next time!

I will probably be heading that way on Friday. I have two routes planned one for Saturday and one for Sunday. I will be heading back Monday morning.
