Anyone familiar with little grass valley reservoir CA?

Postby nevadatear » Sun Aug 02, 2009 8:43 pm

I am looking for a reservable camping area in northern CA and found red feather and running deer on the reservoir which have available sites for Labor Day. Anyone familiar with these campgrounds?

I made reservations at running Deer for labor day, so I will give a report to the list when we return!

Hi, Debbie and Randy:

Here’s what I could find on Little Grass Valley, Running Deer, and Red Feather Camps in my old (I need a new one) California Camping book:

“Little Grass Valley Reservoir is a pretty mountain lake set at 5,000 feet in Plumas National Forest, providing lakeside camping, boating, and fishing for rainbow trout and kokanee salmon. One of seven campgrounds on the eastern shore, this one (Running Deer) is on the far northeastern end of the lake. Looking straight north from the camp is a spectacular view, gazing across the water and up at Bald Mountain, 6,255 feet in elevation. A trailhead for the Pacific Crest Trail is available nearby at Little Fowler Lake about four miles north of Little Grass Valley Reservoir.”

Red Feather Camp “is well developed and popular, set on the eastern shore of Little Grass Valley Reservoir, just south of Running Deer and just north of Little Beaver.”

Both camps have a scenic rating of ‘7’ out of a possible ‘10’. Anything that is a '7' or above is usually good; '8' and above is usually great. I don’t know if it has changed in the past few years; but, both are written up as having drinking water and flush toilets with a sanitary disposal station, boat ramp, fish-cleaning station and grocery store nearby.

Other campgrounds nearby around the reservoir are Black Rock, Horse Camp, Peninsula Tent, Little Beaver, and Wyandotte. All have a scenic rating of ‘7’ except Wyandotte, which is an ‘8’ probably because it is on a small peninsula, extending into the lake. Swimming is available at all of these camps and dogs are allowed on leashes. If you would like any additional information, you can probably get it from the Feather River Ranger District (530) 534-6500.

…Hope this helps.

Now that is what I call a fact-filled reply. Thanks Sharon, I'm heading up that way in a few months and I really needed that.
