Well, the good news is that AT&T scheduled to install before our vacation rather than during, so we heading out from Los Osos on Thursday afternoon if I can get the raccoons loaded. See you all on Friday! :)

Well, I don't know, looks campable. Skylight is a little big, but you'll be able to see the stars!

I thought so too, but my husband the silly pragmatist, though the fact that it isn't on the axel yet might be a bit of a stumbling block.

Mines/caves off limits

Postby nevadatear » Sun Mar 29, 2009 12:07 pm

I had planned some underground trips for those that might want to go, but the info I get now says they are fenced and welded shut, an 80's govt. program. They are still active claims, but the latest work I can find on them was shortly after Gulf Mineral Resources turned over their lease on them in the 80's. Rats....it would have been a neat experience for those that have never been underground in a mine before...Doug

You are exactly right about the mines and some of the caves being welded shut. My son goes caving in the area every year, and they went to a cave they hadn't gone to in 10 years or so last year and it was SECURELY closed off. He took some pics to bring home and show us and my husband the machinst said there was no way anyone was getting in. There are a few caves still around open for explore, but they are pretty hard to find.

Hot springs

Postby nevadatear » Sun Mar 29, 2009 12:10 pm

doug hodder wrote:I'm digging around and trying to find out about some what were relatively low key hot springs with a concrete tub made in the late 40's....probably a major resort now.

I do know of a gold property and there was a turquoise one also....need to get a 7.5min sheet to see if I can still find it. Might bring my pan just for grins. I'm a wimp anymore. I don't want confrontation...those guys carry guns on a mining claim. At the time, I had the run of the place as I worked for a big mineral company and they all figured they could sell a lease to us.
Doug

My son also mentioned hot springs are still there (definitely NOT a major resort!). We were there some 15 years old so I will get some details from him before we come.

http://parks.nv.gov/bi.htmside trip

Postby nevadatear » Sun Mar 29, 2009 12:33 pm

If you have an extra day, I would recommened a side trip down to Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park
http://parks.nv.gov/bi.htm. It has a nice ghost town and visitor center to the NV state fossil, the Ichthyosaur, a 70 foot fish-like reptile. We did a day trip a few years ago. Also, some good friends camped there and are still raving about how quiet and DARK the night was, with no "light pollution" anywhere to be seen. Although it should be the same at the BLM campground!

It sure is. Unlucky for us, it's not ours. It is a HUGE three bay 30 foot tall structure that our good friends are letting us build in while they remodel the house on the property. The garge is about twice the size of the house!

Cathy and I have a friend who is a geologist working for BLM. One of his projects was to weld doors on mine shafts. Guess they figured that was better than having to call the next if kin.

I was in, but now I"m out. Didn't know I was scheduled to work the Easter Holiday this year.

Have a medical appt fri am anyway, so my time would have been really short to be there.

I really wanted to check the area out. will have to make it another time.

Have a great time everybody!!
A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery on a detour!

Hi Doug.

I agree. Looking at the weather, it looks as though I will be traveling in snow/rain all the way to Hickison Summit and then hoping that it clears up for us to enjoy each others company...

Not a real pleasing outlook. :(

We'll just have to keep an eye :? on the weather and adjust accordingly.
