Where is TEARDROPPING permitted?

Forgive a newbie question, but exactly what is the policy
for pulling over at night and teardropping in somewhere public?
Side of the road, public streets, parking lots, etc?
Obviously, if posted "No Overnight" I get it...but are there
known areas permitted? I remember something about
Walmart or KMart or something, having a general policy.
Sam's Club, maybe.

But what if you're just out in the middle of some California
country highway, say, Hwy 1 north between Big Sur
and Monterey, and just want to pull over for the night like
the long-haul truckers do?

Most Walmarts will allow overnight RV parking.
See here http://www.freecampgrounds.com/ for a list of non permitted walmarts.

Truckstops are okay, and rest stops on the highway if you are really brave

Anywhere you wouldn't mind being woken up in the middle of the night because somebody wants a tour of your tear... :x

This stretch of California has a great deal of tolerance for using pull outs overnight... (for one night only). You can't set up camp there of course, but in transit, the police know that area campsites are very often full and folks can find themselves isolated with a long winding stretch of highway in front of them.

I think for safety reasons alone they allow it. Nonetheless, it is kind of a long standing tradition in Big Sur to be able to do this. But again, don't abuse it and DO NOT set up ANY outside items. Just sleep in your tear and pull out in the morning - no problem.
