I am having surgery (again) on my amputated thumb on December 27th. To save some money we are driving down from Reno and plan to camp. Since I will be pre and post op, we will need bathrooms and showers. For this trip RV park would be ok. My surgery will be out patient at Green Valley surgery center. any suggestions for us in the Henderson/Las Vegas area? RV parks that take teardrops? Are there showers at lake mead? Camping around the red rocks? Thanks!

Hi Debbie, bummer to have another surgery for your poor thumb, I hope it goes well! We haven't done any camping in Southern Nevada yet so it will be good to get some intel for future trips too. Perhaps a quick pm to the nice TearJerckers members down there would get the ball rolling? We hope you have a speedy recovery dear lady.
All the best,
Dave

thanks Dave, I sure hope it helps as well. Thanks also for the suggestion to query the southern NV folks, we are on the same wavelength and I have done just that. By the way, I have referred some good friends of mine to you to come check out your tear. He lives in Fallon and has got the bug to build this winter. Name is Mike. Can you PM your phone number to me? I have lost your card.

i know the nevada side of lake mead there is no power but you could ask Dave and Kathleen with the nevada tearjerkers and las vegas DO society they know that campground very well.
it is a pretty campground and you can take your teardrop. otherwise i only know of the KOA in vegas.
good luck with surgery.

Sorry to hear that you have to have more surgery on that thumb, Debbie. I hope this time will the the charm!
I don't know much about that area but I do know that you'll be getting into "Snow Bunny" season, when the northern RVers go south for the winter; so, an RV campground site might be more difficult to find. If I were looking, I'd check into state and national parks as those usually have a time limit on the number of days a camper can stay. Some of the best camping spots that I have found have been on the advice of the rangers, who know about spots that the locals might not even be aware of. I would call the Lake Mead National Park (702) 293-8990
and ask the rangers there.

Dave and Kathleen, or Joanne, may be a better source, but I will add my 2 cents....
From what I recall, out at Lake Mead there are no showers or hook-ups. My suggestion would be to check the RV lots which are connected to the casinos. I believe that Sam's Town has one, and I am not sure which other ones do. If you check online you can probably find something.
And depending how you are feeling, the Dutch Oven group will be out at Boulder Beach for New Years. Feel free to stop by.
Good luck!!! I hope to see you while you are here.

I think it's darn clever of you to turn a run to the hospitable into a camping trip!
Cathy and I camped out at Valley of Fire, it was an awesome place to stay and there are flush toilets, but I can't remember if there was a shower as we usually use the one in our tear. Don't think there is power save at the bathroom. It's also a bit of a drive from Henderson, not that far, but that road is not exactly straight. But it's a 10 out there.
There is also Red Rock, that is a BLM campground, haven't camped there.
All our best!

Callville Bay campground. It is not that far from Henderson. It is on Lake Mead. No power. Bring your own. Showers are over by the restaurant/store/bar area of the marina. Showers are $ 1.25. What a deal.
You can read a bit more about the campground and see photos of last weeks dutch oven Thanksgiving weekend at Callville Bay campground here:

I was just at the RV park side of the Boulder Beach campground and the lady said they no longer offer showers to the campers anymore. I guess we are to trashy. However she told me of showers at the Boulder City city pool. It is on 5th street and Ave B I believe. I found it in google. $ 3.00. Sure beats $ 5.00. It is only about 5 miles from the campground. Plus Boulder City is such a cool little town. Diners, Drive Inns, and Dives had the Coffee Cup restaurant on his show. Good place to stop and eat.

Hey, Debbie!
How goes the thumb? Can you tell yet if the surgery helped?
How about a one "thumb" answer? (sorry...couldn't resist):

OR

OR TOO SOON TO KNOW (2S2K)?
Are you home yet? How/where was your stay?
Thinking of you and hoping I made you laugh, even if only a smirk.

Hi sharon, surgery went well. We didn't make it out to the gathering, I just wasn't up to it. spent 5 days pretty much watching tv in the condo. Thumb is numb where it hurt before, and believe me numb is better than pain. However, the surgery was so extensive (over 50 stitches, and I have pictures that would make a strong man nauseaous, and I am a nurse) I am still having a lot of post surgical pain. We are back home and I am mostly sleeping and remembering how I felt like this the last go round. Amazing how what seems like a little thing, thumb, can sap so much of your energy in healing. Still to early to know, but I am hopeful! Appreciate your concern.
