Homemade Ice Cream while camping (with no elect!)

I saw a guy on TV who took two big ziploc bags. In one, he put all the normal ingredients for homemade ice cream (cream, vanilla, etc.) and in the other he put a bunch of ice. Sealed the ice cream bag, put it in the ice bag, sealed the ice bag and tossed it around in his hands (or wrapped in a towel, brr) for about 5-7 minutes. When the ice cream bag was taken out, it had what looked to be real homemade ice cream in it. Cut the corner off the ice cream bag and squeeze it out like soft serve (easiest way to remove from ziploc, also)

Hey,
That sounds a heck of a lot easier than the icream maker I just got.
I've made my own version of Ben & Jerry's Cherry Garcia two times now for my kids and both times I had to throw it in the freezer to get it to thicken up good. It turned out better than B&J according to my kids, but it sure took a while.

No Prob,
2 1/2 Cups Heavy Whipping Cream
1 1/4 Cups Half & Half
3/4 Cups Sugar (Sometimes the kids put in 1 cup by "accident"
1 TBLSPN Real Vannila
MIX for 20 Min.
Add Three Hershey Milk Chocolat Bars (Frozen so the break up into little chunks easier)
Add 15 Pitted Bing Cherries (Frozen and quarterd up, Safeway had them frozen in bags)
MIX 10 more Min.
Stick in freezer until desired thickness is achieved. (If you've got an ice cream maker like mine)
Makes somewhere around 1 qt., maybe a bit more.

The ziploc method works very well. Here's another verison that also works well:

Replace the outer ziploc bag with a #10 coffee can with lid. Put the ingredients inside a ziploc. Close and put the ziploc inside the can. Add ice and salt. Put on the lid and have the kids roll the can back and forth between them on the ground. If you have very active kids or bumpy ground, you may want to duct tape the cover on the can. Depending on how warm it is outside and how much ice and salt you use, you may have to open the can and add more of each.

Growing up in my family, making homemade ice cream with a handcrank maker was a monthly occurance. More often if we had company. We all had good arm muscles :D :

With our kids, my husband and I have gone to using an electric maker, but we do have a handcranked one and use it occasionally for youth activities and such. We've even used it at a teardrop gathering where we made dutch oven peach cobbler over the fire. We had a lot of happy campers!

If you have the room, not likely, for a ice cream churn they make small portable ones, bye

If you can't bring all the necessities in life, let the campground provide them!

I much prefer to drag my body a few feet to the nightly ice cream truck that passes through
the campground... lots of variety too!

I want to camp out where Betsey and her gang are! I won't take very much,. I promise!

I recall very fondly the home made ice cream socials we had when I was a kid in the farming communitees of the mid-west - especially with freshly picked strawberries. Nothing like it with the possible exception of freshly brewed beer when you take a brewery tour.

Dave,

Well, we aren't much of a gang but we have been known to raise a few eyebrows. Of course, hauling a teardrop around, who wouldn't?

And you are welcome to drop by anytime you are in our neck of the woods. Of course, if you are going to Minden next summer, we'll be there and we might just have to make some ice cream and cobbler... :D
