I am selling my 1947 Tourette Tear Drop Trailer project. This all American Made classic teardrop was built just after World War II from aluminum that was recycled from the wings of old aircraft. I am not completely sure of the measurements right now but I believe that it is 5' wide (queen size matress) and 10' long.
It features two doors on either side and a metal porthole window. There is a galley in the rear with an original ice box, cabinets and drawers. Someone also installed a plexiglass skylight on the ceiling for added light. There is also a roof vent as well.
The original wood that was used on the trailer floor and some of the interior trim has all rotted away. I rebuilt the trailer last summer using new treated plywood for the floor. I took a wire brush to the metal frame and scrubbed all of the loose dirt and rust from it. I sprayed the metal frame with a rust inhibitor and then hunter green Rustoleum spray paint. I then placed a hard foam insulation on top of the metal frame and place my wood floor on that. I put several coats of water sealant on the wood before I put it on the frame. Then I sprayed three layers of underbody coat on the whole underside on the wood and metal frame as well as the leaf springs. On top of the wood floor I put this floor covering material that is kind of like linoleum (I can't remember what it is called but is expensive) but looks like wooden planks. I rebuilt that trailer to last since it was such a pain to take the shell off. The trailer alone is worth about $800. It also has new tow chains attached to the trailer. I just added some images (2 OCT 2014) that I took last year of the trailer base before I added the wood floor to it. As you can see it is pretty solidly built.
The aluminum shell is not currently mounted to the trailer and would have to be either put back on the trailer or set on top of a flat bed trailer. It is too heavy to lift by myself.
I am selling my Teardrop Trailer project because I have had it for 2 years now and just don't have the time anymore to work on it.My girlfriend is getting sick looking at it and the trailer is taking my entire garage.
I would like to sell it for $1500 or trade it for a smaller Teardrop Camper that is completely ready to camp out in. I can be contacted at [email protected] or by phone at (503) 347 - 6662. I live in Independence, Oregon just 13 miles south of Salem.
The pictures below were taken when I first bought it. I have cleaned up the teardrop trailer since I have bought it. The aluminum camper shell is not currently mounted on the trailer base.
To see other examples of this model of Teardrop Trailer just go to Google and type "Tourette Teardrop". There is even a youtube video tour of one.
If you copy this link and past it to your search bar it will take you to the Teardrops and Tiny Trailers forum thread where I talked about restoring this trailer.
