2024 Custom Built “Squareback” Camper
As a retired pilot, and an avid restorer of antique airplanes, I was looking for a different sort of project. The tntt.com website inspired me to build a tiny trailer, just for the fun of building. I already have a very nice Grand Design RV.
The trailer is built tough. All joints are glued and screwed with Titebond II and secured with construction screws. Stand on it, put a rack and canoes on it, and for a super camper, put a rooftop fold down tent on it. It’s so strong!
The camper is perfect for a solo camper, two smaller adults, or an adult and child. Put a three-place rooftop tent on top and you double the space. Built on a new Harbor Freight 4x8 trailer.
Here are a few of the details: It took me around six months to build. The floor is ¾ inch plywood painted below with truck bedliner material. The rear bulkhead and cabinet are also ¾ inch plywood. The exterior walls and roof are 5/8 inch plywood with 1x3 spars connecting it all together. The door is factory-built, with a built-in screen door. This door, along with the side-sliding window on the opposite wall, provide a ton of ventilation for the Max Air ceiling vent. Camper is foam-panel insulated.
The interior floor is a beautiful laminate flooring. There’s a made to fit memory foam mattress, covered in a beautiful blue/grey fabric. There’s a custom headboard that houses the fuse panel, along with providing a USB and cigarette lighter plug for additional accessories.
The rear galley is accessed through the upper and lower Dutch doors. The lower section is for storage…food, water, cooking utensils. The upper section is the food prep and cooking area.
The camping accessories in the pictures are for staging only. It has never been camped in, and the camping gear is not included.
The trailer is entirely 12 volt. The power comes from a marine battery that is hooked up to a NOCO charger (2a). It’s enclosed in a double battery box on the front. If you are somewhere with shore power, you can plug the charger in and charge up or maintain the battery.
Lastly the trailer comes with a June 2025 Georgia tag, along with a bill of sale. I also have the original Certificate of Origin from Harbor freight.
There is so much more. The description is very basic. What does it need? I strongly encourage you to replace the tires that came on the trailer. They are 45MPH tires with a fairly low load range. You can buy a set of two, pre-mounted high-speed tires on Amazon. You would then have two spare tires in inventory. While the 2 amp charger NOCO charger is adequate, it will be a much faster recharge if you replace it with a charger of higher amperage.
