Scotty owners, what have I gone and done?

Have a teardrop or a trailer for sale? Need one? Post here...

Postby HABSFAN2006 » Thu Jul 09, 2009 11:44 am

Did she cross at the Detroit / Windsor customs?
Because I sold a Teardrop also to somone in Illinois that had brought their own trailer plate, and went through no problems at all.

A nice TD! Bet you hate to see it leave.

I picked up the Scotty and brought it back today. Almost made the trip non-eventful, except for the stone from the gravel truck that went through the front center window on the scotty, and 5 minutes from the border crossing the license plate bracket packs it in and leaves my plate somewhere on the I90. I thought it would be an issue but then I gave my head a shake and realized that this was Canada I was going back into, and I'm Canadian.
"Citizenship?" - Canadian
"How long were you out of the country?" - since Monday
"What were you doing?" - shopping for guns and bomb making material
"Okay, have a nice day"!

The 62 pulls very nice. I was able to achieve 70mph with absolutely no sway. They don't make them like they used to - in a sort of good way!

I/we crossed at Sarnia / Port Huron.

"What were you doing in Canada?"
"Um -- making a wrong turn. GPS said to turn here, so we did, and then saw sign saying 'Bridge to Canada' "

"How long were you in Canada?"
"About an hour."

"What are you doing in Michigan?"
"Visiting the beach. Hubby wants to 'wade in all border waters' as a life project."

"Ok. Continue. But when the sign says 'Bridge to Canada' it means that!"

No mention at all of the tiny teardrop trailer. Perhaps it was hidden behind the 19 ft RoadTrek Van/RV! The teardrop went home to Chicago outskirts with Canada plates on it. Len - now that you've lost a plate, do you want this one mailed back to you?

That's good, thanks for sharing!
Would have thought it was hard to cross with Canadian plates..
questions could be asked... required bill of sale??? no registration
to your name at that point etc, but happy to see all went well.

Enjoy your tear!

I am surprised it was that easy. When we went over to meet Deb in Port Huron, they actually had a look inside the whole thing.
But hey glad it happened well.
Deb, it now appears I will need my plate back. You are welcome to pick up my spare somewhere on the I90! :)
When you are done with the plate, then please send it along.
Thank you

Lic plate: will do! I'll get it in the mail ASAP.

Customs answers: all were quite truthful answers, because we had intended to do the switch on the Michigan side. That's why Len was going through US customs at all -- we planned to meet in Port Huron. After we realized we were stuck with going into Canada, I called Len and he agreed to turn around after he got through US customs. There was far less of a line on the Canadian side. So we did the swap on Canadian soil.

I think if we hadn't had true answers (hubby obviously peeved at me for saying we should turn on that road) they would have paid more attention to what was behind us. We weren't attempting to conceal the teardrop, but they didn't ask the right questions. We *weren't* going in to Canada to purchase the vehicle. It only ended up that way.

Modified interior?

Postby xrover » Fri Jul 10, 2009 7:16 am

I have been on the Scotty website and looking at the rebuilds and have not found a similar layout as the unit I just picked up.
So mine is a 1962 Scotty Sportsman 13' Gaucho model. Opposite the door is a built in cabinet that houses the bathroom and adjacant to that is the fridge. The cook top and sink are on the same wall as the door. I am wondering if to put a bathroom in the owner swapped sides.

http://gallery.me.com/lcater#100163/bat ... olor=black

I took this shot from the door. The curved wall is the bathroom where the toilet sits, and then there is a shower head on the rear wall of the bathroom. The height of the room is only about 5' 8", just enough to fit me, but tough to wash ones hair. The 'woodgrain' laminate is in excellent condition however is in no way stock.

Let the experts speak! I will post more photos up this weekend.
Thanks

I think you have a 15' Sportsman. (They may not have called it that back in those days, but..) Same as the Hilander without the dip in the roof.

What do the 3ed & 4th numbers of your vin. number say?

Happy Trails

I went back out and measured it. It's definitely a 13' model. I saw the curved bathroom on another unit somewhere on the internet. So maybe it was a speciality but I think it was not a production model. The countertop which is switched over to the door side, only has enough room for the stove to be turned 90 degrees. As well there is a bit of an overhang into the stepwell area. The flip up side table now flips up in the gaucho area.
The vin is 618070.
I have updated my www with new photos. Please take a look and tell me where some work is required.

Google NSSO they have all the info on their site to help you out....
"It is a cruel thought, that, when we feel ourselves standing on the firmest ground in every respect, the cursed arts of our secret enemies, combining with other causes, should effect, by depreciating our money, what the open arms of a powerful enemy could not." --Thomas Jefferson to Richard Henry Lee, 1779. One Question on th length,,, is 13' the box length or the tongue to tail length,,,, ??? 13' scotty is measured tongue to tail at 13' which gives ya a box length of only 10' ,, your unit is either 13' box length or I need to get my eyeball recalibrated,,, :D

jest MHO,,,,

The box is 13' so tail to tip makes it a 15' model. I would have thought they would have measured the box as the size. Oh well. Still, they pack a lot of features in such a small space.

Yes they do. I just took apart a small bit of the back panel where the siding had come off. The wood is in very good condition which leads me to believe it was done before. What I can't believe is how thin the insulation is. It's less than 1/8", more like a wrap. I guess I was expecting from the photos I have seen on the NSSO that there would be something with some R value.

Darn, someone snapped up the scotty hubcaps on ebay a few minutes ago!
