Teardrop 5' wide 5x8 Tiny Awning or hatch awning or tailgate

Here is a vintage look awning for your Tiny Travel Trailer or Teardrop Camper. This awning measures five feet rail length by eight feet. It is made out of 9.25 ounce Sunbrella pattern #4933.The awning is trimmed with custom made Sunbrella binding and facings making the entire awning mildew, UV, fade, rot, rain, tear, and mildew resistant. There are 2 ½ inch facings surrounding all of the edges giving the awning a sturdy shape and providing reinforcement for the grommets. The pull cord is 5/16 inch marine grade weatherproof cord. Nylon #69 thread, intended for outdoor use, was used for stitching. Heavy-duty grommets were placed in the end corners and halfway down on the sides. The side grommets can be used for extra support. This awning might work as a galley hatch awning for a 5- foot wide teardrop. It would provide the cook with approximately a 5x4 area of shade and rain protection. It is displayed on a 5- foot trunk to demonstrate the potential for tailgating and/or hatch possibilities.KF $150.00 includes shipping continental USA

Looks nice Kristi. I've found that the galley hatch needs complete coverage to protect the contents of the galley in the event of rain. We use a 10' x 10' screen room that we place about a foot above the hurricane hinge. I'm not a fan of heavy easy-ups. An awning that would cover a larger area and partially connect to awning molding (on the tear roof above the hinge) might be attractive to some. Danny

I am alway appreciative of constructive comments. Eventually I will come up with an awning that better meets the needs of Teardrop owners.This one does have a pull cord to slide into an awning rail connected to the TD body just before the hatch opening. It also has grommets at midpoint for extra support when the hatch is down. If I understand you correctly, it just needs to be longer?Here is a picture of a longer 4' I made.Keep the suggestions coming, I am making these awnings using T&TTT members imput because a need for awnings was voiced.KF

Nice work!

When it is raining and the galley is open water tends to enter the side of the galley.

Maybe have sides on the awning to protect the galley? When it's not raining roll them up?

For my taste, I would only want an awing that extends about 4' past the edge of the hatch (and have sides). I feel it should be kept in proportion to the teardrop.....small.

The main reason I would want an awning is to add some protection from sun and rain while cooking. I would still bring my EZ-Up to put over the picnic table to have a protected area while eating.

I have enough matching fabric to make two 4x6 rain shields but that still leaves the triangular gaps on both sides open.Any suggestions?

Hatch profiles (curvatures, angles and lengths) vary greatly. I think trying to make a "universal" rain shield to fit all teardrop hatches would be a challenge. I am sure some version can be done but just not sure if it would look nice.

It may have to be a custom order.

The interested party could trace the side profile of their hatch on paper and send it to you. They would also need to measure the height of the hinge point to the ground and the height of the end of the hatch to the ground when the hatch is in the open position. This would give you the ability to duplicate the angle, curvature and height of the hatch in the open position. Fabricate the awning/rain shield to match the size, angle, height and curvature of their hatch.

I have the rain shields almost done and started working on what I will call the gap-flaps.I understand about the height and curvature not being universal. I believe that I have figured out something that might work universally though.If nothing else, there will be privacy panels and I am having fun trying to figure it out.KF

On my trailer awning I ordered an additional side wall that attaches to the awning with D rings. Perhaps detachable side flaps/walls. Then the walls are only used in inclimate weather, or when the sun shines to bright. An additional option would be an enclosed screen room attachment. If the awning covered a decent area, screen walls will keep flying insects out of the galley area.

I bought a screen wall attachment for a pop up at Walmart. It is a bit larger than I need for my awning, but as soon as I can find a seamstress, or learn how to use the sewing machine, I will cut it down to size for my awning on the canned ham trailer.

As a suggestion for your design phase. You might want to sketch some drawings out, and let everyone critic your ideas. When you feel you have something, sew a prototype.

I have so many great ideas coming in, in open forum and in private, that my head is spinning! I am already working on the side panel D-ring attachment idea. The panels could be for rain, privacy, or a tablecloth. How is that for versatility? I also have the window awning idea floating around in my head. My favorite idea, I have held together with clothes pins! When the weather clears up, I will take a picture. People seem to like to see my creativity in progress. My prototype is a site to behold but you have to start somewhere.Keep the ideas coming. Thanks KF
