Arne, I am in the same shape...I paid 399.99 a couple of months ago(and thought then and still think it was a good deal) and it will be another 2r3 before I am ready to install the P/C...but it did work great while plugged in and sitting on the workbench...

M/J, you may beat me.. my back is still screwed up...

Am interested in how you plan to haul and attach the p/c.. right now, my plan is to haul it in the galley, but move it and plug in the front.

I have not looked to see what comes with the unit that would be useful in attaching it to the front of the tear. I know there are hoses and some kind of attachers....

Do you have that planned out yet? I'd like to haul it in the galley just because I want the weight back there...

In my current tear, the weight is front (tv, a/c, heater) or back (galley, microwave, etc.).. having the majority of the weight in the front and back, instead of over the axle, causes the trailer to sway easily..

Therefore, I'm trying to get more weight to the rear, so the axle will also be further back and eliminate this problem on my new one.

Also, I'm hoping for under 1,000 pounds with a 100 pound tongue weight, so don't want it in a box on the front.

Arne... we build with the front box/bulkhead, integral to each other...this leaves a 3.5x6x12" dead airspace against either side wall in the front...we will use this space to duct 2" pipe (in/out on opposite side) into the front box, where the connectors will be...the unit will be mounted on the tongue and the short flex connectors that come with the unit will be used for final connection...we are nowhere near that point so plans could change...

I've actually given some thought to running pvc from back to front for duct work under the floor, so I don't have to heft the p/c around. Just place it on the ground and hook it up....

Since you have looked at yours, is the thermostat on the unit, so you set it and forget it? Or have you looked into putting a remote stat inside the tear?... I don't like to take stuff apart and monkey with it, but I might put an off/on switch inside..

Re: Petcool reply from Hi-tech

Hey Hitech!

I hope you can reach your projected price point. I am considering purchasing one in the future so maybe it will work out.

If you enjoy camping maybe you should think about a tear! It's a lot nicer than setting up and taking down a tent. If you made your own insulated tent you have the "sickness" that it takes to do a tear.

After compiling some statistics is made sence to offer our PETCool to people who love camping and to tear drop trailer owners. I do not have a tear drop trailer but I do use a PETCool on an Insulated tent that I made and just use an electrical hookup camp site. I know the $20 discount is not much but with free shipping its about a $40 savings off the lowest price available for the 2500 BTU model. We are the only ones who offer a 1 year drop exchange warranty that start over again if the unit fails and a new one is shipped. I like the creativity you folks have shown modifying your tear drop trailers and hope some day I have time to enjoy one myself. I'm just trying to make this unit as affordable as I can to help us all enjoy the great outdoors. Over the coming year with new suppliers I hope to have the cost of the unit down to about $279.

You know I think MexicanTear runs a p/c for his tear. He has it sitting outside back by the galley and has plumbing into the side of the tear.

Yeah but he posted recently that he is going to install a 5K unit.

Arne, the Tstat is on the unit and the probe is in the return air side...set it and forget it fine as long as you don't want to change it during the night...for under 30 bucks, you can by a 120v relay/Tstat to control power on to the unit from inside....

hitech -

You're not the guy with whom I spoke prior to purchasing my PetCool last July or so, are you? Last name begins with a "T"?

Jack, can you shed a little more light on this 110v/T-Stat? Wasn't thinking of using any type of external T-stat, but it might be a nice addition.

Thanks!

I'm no expert, but if there is an adjustment on the unit, would it be as simple as leaving the probe where it is, but putting the temp adjuster from the unit into the tear, with a long connecting wire, so it could be adjusted from inside.?

I'm all guessing I may be overthinking this... I could easily just move a blanket around if the temp stayed withing 2-4 degrees and keep my life a lot simpler....

Hitech posted the first link I was able to find Specs:

RECOMMENDATIONS:
• Insulated R-12 Enclosures
• Maximum Size - 6’ x 6’ x 6’
• Minimum Size - 22” x 22” x 25”

6x6x6 is 216 cu. ft
5x8x4 is 160 cu. ft

Based on this, I can see where folks w/o Insulation have found it to be insufficient. I think most foam has an R value of about 5-7 per inch. It would also depend on where you park - in direct sun or not.
Long extensions as show on the photo Gage posted would also look like an opportunity to lose capacity.

It would appear that installation/application is key to get the cooling desired.

*an additonal thought, I suspect this calculation was made with 1 normal size dog in mind and that teardroppers use it with 2 adults which may also effect cooling capacity in removing the humidity generated.

Insulation Requirments (Hi-Tech)

Postby hitech » Fri May 25, 2007 2:33 pm

The PETCools are effective in most small tear drop tailers if some type of insulation is used. We recommend using a reflectix double sided foil insulation available at your home improvment center. This insulation is about a 1/4 inch thick and reflects away 97% of radiant heat energy. It comes in 24 or 48" roll up to 25 feet long. If this is used in conjunction with at least 1 inch of foam insulation you will have the benefit of a radiant heat barrier and a barrier which slows heat transfer.
