You may want to consider a cargo conversion. I've definitely seen MANY cargo trailers (typically 5x10 with one side door and two rear barn doors and a vent on top) for well under $1,000. It would be easy (even in an apartment complex) to put cabinets across the back, and throw a bed down in the remaining cargo area and you're done. As you feel like it you could run electrical conduit around, maybe install nicer walls and flooring, replace the roof vent with a fantastic fan, install a small AC unit, even put in some porthole style windows (for light more than ventilation) with relative ease. If you want ventilation, I would just install screen curtains just inside the door with a weighted dowel/bar in the bottom hem.
The good thing about a cargo conversion is the most difficult work is already done -- you'll have a floor, walls, and a roof all on wheels with lights and hitch. The rest is all just personal preference. No, it doesn't have the charming shape of the teardrop, but it actually could give you more useful space. Later you could always sell it and then buy a tear. Teardrops are more expensive because they are usually custom made from the ground up.
My budget is about double or even triple yours (for a used, basic, no frills teardrop), but I have yet to find one myself! I may end up going cargo conversion. Do you find yourself extending that distance on Craig's Helper more and more? Haha. I know I'm up to about 1,000 miles!
