Looking for small Travel Trailer

Postby elad » Sun Feb 22, 2009 11:09 am

I'm looking to buy a small lightweight TT I can pull behind my 4 cyl. Tacoma. I will use it for short trips throughout the year. I am 6'4" tall and although I don't need full headroom it would be nice if the bed was at least 76/78". Would like cooking, fridge, sink. Does not have to have shower or toilet (but could). Would prefer it was ready to go in good working condition. I live in Northern California and would travel throughout this part of the state into Oregon for the right trailer.
I would consider a Teardrop also.
Thanks!

You need to look one of the fiberglass trailers, Scamp. Burro etc. Anything else will be too heavy. I pull my 15' Kenskill with a Tundra and would never try it with anything smaller. Keep an eye on Craigslist, E-bay can get very expensive unless you are lucky.
I had a 10x5 Teardrop that fit me fine, 6'4", it had a queen bed inside. Great trailer but I needed a standie.

Hi elad,

I would highly suggest at 6'4" tall you first try sleeping in a Tear with a bed only 74" in length and I think you will probably raise your minimum length 4 inches to a 78" bed. Remember that you are 76 inches tall while standing "with your feet flat on the ground", but when lying down there will be a natural flex or extension with your feet that will want to take place.

I am 6'4" as well and have a 78 inch bed, so I can relate. Even with that I feel my one saving grace is that I have a 6-wide Teardrop which allows me to sleep in a slight diagonal (staying on my half). This gives me a few more inches of length to comfortably stretch out. Without that, I would want to kick the back panel out.

Scott,

Thanks. You are right about the length. I was thinking I could sleep with 74" by lying diagonally but I might as well go for something that is going to work and I'll be more comfortable. I edited my post. One thing I am realizing is I will have more of a chance finding sleeping arrangements that fit me easier with a teardrop then most of the travel trailers on the market.
Thanks!

You got it. The diagonal plan is a good one... "but factor it only on one half of the total bed width". All of your best laid plans (pun intended) will blow up the first time you sleep 2 and have to stay on your half of the bed ... (depending on circumstances of course.)

Good luck and enjoy the search for the perfect Tear or Tiny Trailer for you!

I am 6-2 and went to a 4 x 10 teardrop to get extra bed length-also picked up some front cabinet room. The sleeping length is 84 inches. My teardrop is a Hunter Long Shadow, but there are others out there that offer a longer sleeping length than 74 inches.

Try

Postby Franklin » Mon Feb 23, 2009 11:50 am

You can try: www.fiberglassrv.com as they have some classifieds and are good about answering questions about "size". My husband is 6'2" and that is giving me fits trying to get something that will work since we would like to be able to at least to sit at a dinette inside when we make roadside stops. I know that Scamp is now making their trailers a little taller inside but still....We are hoping to build but after "mocking up" the reality of his size (6'2" 200 lbs)...It is handy though when we are shopping and need something from the higher shelves  Good luck and if I see something, I'll send the info your way. My 4x10 wazat has an 81" bed length and the lower cabinet has no doors so your hands can trail into the forward cabinet making it feel even longer. The 5x10 would be ideal but I like my 4x just fine too.

Forward lower cabinet in case you were wondering looks like this.... (without the stereo that I added)
