1979 Sunline Sunspot, $1000 firm - SOLD to Frank A!

Life throws you curves, and you learn to swerve. My most recent swerve is a cancer recurrence, pretty serious, which will keep me from camping much this summer if at all. I don't want to do it, but I know that the smart thing to do in my life at this point is to sell my 1979 Sunspot so that someone else can enjoy her.

The unit is camp-ready as is, but the 12v system isn't functional (I was always planning to rewire it.) Meanwhile, I used a 400w power station/battery charger to power my cell phone, inflate airbeds, etc. It has two new tires with less than 1000 miles on them, put on in 2008. Bearings were repacked at that time. There are more pics in my album, but here is a basic side shot of the door side:

Image

The unit weighs approx. 600 pounds. It's 5ft. wide by about 10ft long, including the tongue. It's 54 inches tall inside, which means that short people like me can sort of stand up inside. I have a camp cot that is a couch during the day and bed at night, and it goes with the trailer. Some of my other camping stuff can also come with the trailer. It's due for caulking of the vent, the door needs to be rebuilt due to some dry rot on the bottom, and windows/doors could use sealing all around. It has one side door and three functioning old-style but relatively new louver windows, as well as a sliding frosted glass/screen window in the door.

No galley - I used a moveable chuck box and cook on picnic tables. In place of the original galley, water tank, stove and fridge it has a single flat shelf. It doesn't have the Sunspot's original diner-style booths and table that fold down into a bed; the owner prior to me gutted the interior and refitted it with birch plywood.

This is a vintage trailer, one of probably only 15 or so manufactured in that model year. There's more info at the Sunline Owners Group forums. It's a great little trailer that tows nice behind my Jeep Patriot and towed great behind my Chevy S10 before that. The price is $1000 firm.

I'm near Syracuse, NY. The trailer is kept garaged, and I can show it by appointment, but can't deliver or drive it to anyone at this time. If sold, I can get it registered so that the buyer can tow it. I have a transferrable title as a home-built, although I also have the original serial number from the tongue if anyone wants to try to register it as an original Sunspot. If interested, PM or drop me an email.

update Mar. 6: I've agreed to accept a deposit from Frank A for final delivery in May. So the trailer is "under contract" as the real estate people say. If anything changes, I'll repost. Thanks so much for all of the interest.

Gaelen, I'm sorry to hear about the recurrence of your cancer. I hope that things will progress well for you and that the road won't be too rough. It's a shame that you have to sell the Sunspot but you know what will be best for you in this situation. Good luck with the sale. It's a cute little trailer. I remember checking it out a couple years ago at the Tear Up the ADK gathering.
I wish you a speedy return to good health!

Boy, I wish I had a grand and could just do the deal. It sure is a great looking trailer, and would be perfect for Gail & I.

I wish you hadn't had a recurrence of cancer Pat, and the Sunspot wasn't for sale. I sure do hope things work out.

I'll be in touch later today. Best of luck!

Frank

Hi Gaelen,
I'm not sure if you check your Private Messages or not but I am definitely interested in your sunspot!! I can give you my cell if you email me privately or reply to my PM to you.
I'm in Central MA but my brother has inlaws right in syracuse that can go look at it for me. I would not be adverse to making a road trip in the near future to go get it if all works out, especially if I can find an agility trial nearby to enter!! that would be a plus!!
At first I thought I wanted a TTT that was fully equipped but now I'm really warming up to making one my own with help from my dad and my bro.
Please contact me as soon as you can if this cutie is still available!!
PamH with Mickey, Guinness and Koby-papzillas extraordinaire!!

Pam - I've sent you a PM. And if a nearby agility trial is your goal, check ot S(yracuse)OTC, mid-May - I think the premium is up on the website www.sotc.info.

Another one that is too far away.
And for so cheap, It's stealing.
I really like the Sunspot.

One idea for all you folks that are too far away, you can always pay to have it shipped.

I have bought 3 vehicles on Ebay and had all of them shipped to me. It was better and cheaper than driving to get them.

Hi Steve,
I have heard of people having things like RVs shipped for reasonable prices but when you're buying off of Ebay and Craig's List, have you ever been disappointed when the RV got to you? Were all three just as the description and your conversations with the seller said they were? I am a little skittish with buying sight unseen unless someone I trust can go look at it for me if I'm too far away.
Would love to hear more about your Ebay experiences with this sort of thing.
Pam

Gaelen,

Just checking, is this still available. I just might be interested. I was looking at the pics you have of it. Looks like the Kitchen area in the back is no longer there. Is that true.

Still might be interested. Would look good behind my Element.

Jim

Gaelen, you are asking an extremely fair price! If you lived within 1,000 miles of me, that Sunspot would be mine by now!

I pray you are fairing will, and that God grant you the mercy of a speedy recovery. :worship:

I see that Pat has identified me as the lucky person. I can't tell you how excited Gail and I are to finally have a tiny trailer for camping. We've been tent campers now going on 40 years, and it's only appropriate that now we have our first grandchild on the way, we get to move up to a real hard sided trailer. While we would have liked a td, this Sunspot will be quite the ticket.

We expect our first trip with the Sunspot to be Fish Creek in June. I just made those reservations yesterday. In July, we have reservations for camping on Keuka Lake at the state park there from the 12th to the 21st. Looks like we'll be in our new-to-us Sunspot for that trip too. We go there very year for the Wine Country Classic Boats show in Hammondsport. In fact, our classic speedboat is at the top of this year's event poster!

Over time we will be working on some aspects of the Sunspot and will be adding a few things. We are fully equipped for tent camping, so just having a classic tiny travel trailer is a big deal. We shouldn't really NEED anything else.

So thank you again Pat! We are so pleased to be joining this wonderful community (I've been lurking for a while...)

Frank

Hey Frank
I had my trailer in the Wine county classic boat show in Hammondsport
2009 on Sunday. What a blast.

Gee, no kidding Wayne. We very much enjoy that area, and hope to retire over there someday. In fact, we've been looking for a small village home in the Finger Lakes to start working on for retirement.

We are members of the Wine Country Classic Boats chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society (ACBS), as opposed to the Hudson River chapter (we almost live on the Hudson) or the Adirondack chapter. We love that area. My classic boat is a fiberglass tunnel hull speedboat, 1962 vintage, with a '63 Merc1000 100 hp in-line 6 "tower of power." We have a great time with it!
