My husband and I want to try camping with a teardrop before buying one. We would like to rent a teardrop for 3 weeks beginning the first week of May 2012. We live in Bend Oregon. We are willing to travel 1 day to pick-up the trailer.
We would like to explore Redwood National Forest, Yosemite, and maybe get a stage or 2 of the Amgen Tour of California (bike stage race).
Any leads you can give me for rentals would be appreciated.
Happy teardropping.

Julie, there are not many TD rental outfits and most of them rent Little Guys(unless a private individual would rent theirs...not likely)...I would suggest you contact Scott at Little Guy and maybe he could put you onto a rental outfit in your area.....

Camp-Inn does rentals, but you'd haveta come to 'sconsin to get it.

Camped right next to vacations-in-can two weekends ago for 4 days. Great people, great trailers. I would recommend their trailer over a little guy. I know owners love them, but there is nothing like a custom built trailer by a master crafts person. They were featured in Sunset magazine last year. However, they are pretty booked up, but you never know. Joe and Leslie will take care of you.

Based on the rates posted on their web site a 3-week rental will set you back ~$1500. That's 50% to 30% of what a good used teardrop will set you back. As they don't seem to devalue too badly I'd say go ahead and buy one. If you don't want to keep it afterward sell it, remember you've got a $1500 margin vs. trailer rental cost before you start loosing money on the sale...

If you are considering the option above, check out craigslist for Portland. There's a nice basic one in west Salem for $3750.

Are you thinking about renting something just to test it before you build, or before you buy, or thinking "is this the way I really want to camp"? A quality rental for an incident free experience might give you a better idea if you are thinking about buying a manufactured or custom built one. That being said...I have camped with Vacations in a Can builder, Joe a number of times. His stuff is top notch as is the Camp Inn products! There are other builders on the forum that turn out incredible well built/designed/custom tears as well. Check with Halfdome Danny and Prohandyman.
If you were to pick up (buy) a relatively inexpensive build, you would at least get the basics of teardrop camping, but may have some issues dealing with a build that wasn't thought out very well or had funky quality. Not saying that would happen, but it could. At least you would get the education on what you are looking for and could probably turn it. Not all teardrops are created equally.
Read as much as you can on the forum as it's full of info to really help you in deciding on what might be right for you. Just an idea. Doug

Last weekend I was talking to Jim B at the Le May Car Show & Auction where we camp in our teardrops on the Marymount lawn. Jim lives down by the Columbia Gorge & said he bought some teardrops to rent out. It was a brief conservation & if I see him at our next gathering I'll get more information. Don't know if he's a member on the forum.
Thanks Doug,
Danny
Kind of a tearddrop?

there is a guy that rents his T@b out of Eugene. I have only seen him on CL, so I don't know anything about him, but that is an option too. From Bend to Santa Rosa for a rental is a bit of a haul for VIAC, but when I was looking for a new rig I saw theirs and really liked them
