For Sale: Fantastic Fan - $50

Postby Mojave Bob » Thu Oct 17, 2013 7:24 pm

This Fantastic Fan was removed from my Little Guy teardrop. It is a standard 14" white low-profile 12-volt model. It has three speeds and is reversable. It has a speed-reducing resistor installed (provided to me by Fantastic Fan) so that it doesn't blow so hard in such a little space. This resistor is removable, but really works out perfectly for use in a teardrop. The condition is excellent. My Little Guy is always stored indoors when not in use, so there is no yellowing or decay. There will be some silicone caulk still on it from the previous installation. Little Guys have 2x2 ceiling structure, so the bezel is cut to fit a nominal 2" roof thickness. I replaced this fan with a new one from MaxxAir that can more effectively be used in the rain - that is the only reason. I am thinking I would like to get about $50 for it, plus a little to help cover shipping if needed. If you are interested, let me know!

Can you talk about that speed reduction resistor? Where is it installed? We have a campinn with a fantastic....I want more air movement and am curious if they added that out of the factory....

Gerry --

Way late getting back to you on this -- I hadn't reviewed this thread since selling my fan. The resistor is just a little ceramic one that installs along one of the rails supporting the motor. It could actually be installed anywhere in the power wire leading to the fan, but that is the easiest place to access the wiring to put it on. Sorry, I don't have a picture to show you.

Ha. I'm more concerned there's one there....I like a LOT of air movement and noise. I can't sleep without a fan....

I would imagine that if the manufacturer put one on, it would be either in the place I mentioned, or hidden under the inside trim. That would be a bad idea, though, because the resistor will get hot without airflow to cool it. But, they would have put it someplace reasonably accessible, in case they ever had to replace it.

I don't know that one is even there. The way some people talk they expect the low setting to star acting like the fan in Willie Wonkas factory that evacuated the lifting gas :)

It certainly is satisfactory now but more wouldn't hurt....and it's actually more noise I'm looking for....something to drown out the loud SOB next to me that has no idea how loud his voice is and how far it carries after the campground quiets down. We've all set up next to "that guy" one too many times...

I just put a PWM speed controller in mine. I've never hooked it up with the standard 3 speed controller to compare.

Works well, except at very lowest setting where there's a high pitched whine(typical of PWM) Fitting it in was a challenge and ended up removing one of the screw posts with a dremel to get it to fit inside.

If you go the resistor route, I'd cut the heaviest resistor coil on the 3 speed controller, and wire a potentiometer in it's place.
Make another hole and knob to mount it. When the 3 speed is on setting 1, you can use the potentiometer to adjust the speed.
On setting 2 and 3 it just works like before.
You'd have to measure the resistance of the coil you cut to select the right pot rating. Go higher resistance than what you measure and high enough amperage rating.

Head up to the RV surplus place in White Pigeon, MI, and pick up a squirrel cage blower for a large RV furnace. That oughta do it for ya! On a faintly more serious note, have you every looked at the noise machines, such as http://www.amazon.com/myBaby-MYB-S200-SoundSpa-Portable/dp/B0091E31KM/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1402668742&sr=8-4&keywords=noise+machine? We use one when we stay in motels, and they really help block the noises around you. Runs for a week or more on a set of batteries, too.
