Teardrops n Tiny Travel Trailers

Hi All,

The 110 to 12volt converter/powerbox into my "Weekender for 5" is no longer operative. I've just been using a power strip and extension cord, which has sufficed, but would be nice to get the 12 volt accessories (the vent fan, the cabin lights) operative again.

Anyone have a unit they can sell me at a budget price?

I use a power max converter in our teardrop and I am very happy with it. depending on the amps you need they are fairly cheap. Starting at 89.00 on ebay.

May not be what you are looking for but I use these in my camper. Pyramid PS9KX 5A/7A Power Supply with Cigarette Lighter Plug. I got them from Amazon. I use a 3 amp for my fantastic fan and a 5 amp for lights and plugs. If one fails while camping I still have one to supply my needs. I was afraid to get one of the larger $200 converters and then have it fail as some have said they can do in the past. Plus if one of mine does ever quit, I can just pick one up at Walmart or Radio Shack and I am back in business. So far I am three years and 6500 miles into this rig and they are still going strong.

Just don't try to charge a battery with one of those. It will fry the battery.

I use them strictly for 12 volt power when I have 110 volt shore power so no charging is needed. I don't even take the battery with me when I have shore power. When I don't have shore power I hook the twelve volt accessories to the battery. I also have a converter to run the tv and DVD player off the battery when it rains.

As I recall, I have 4 lines 110v at 15amps, coming through breakers that were housed in the converter unit, then 3-4 12v circuits wired into the fan and the 12volt lights. So, I was hoping to get a box that could manage both the 12v and the 110v. I've never used a battery, as I usually camp in campgrounds that have hook-ups, but I like the idea of having the option of a battery.

If your not charging a battery. A power supply from a desktop computer may work good for you. replace the old charger in your power box with the computer power supply.

You know, an IT guy gave me a desk top power supply with that suggestion. I have more than one circuit, between the fans and the 12v lights, but I still may try to get that to work.

Hook the power out of the computer power supply to power the fuse panel so that it powers all your circuits. The power supply will most likely fit in your power box after removing the old transformer and diodes. The IT guy can tell you what wires where to turn on the power supply. But the 12 volt computer power supply will not charge a battery because a battery needs 14+ volts to charge it.

Those computer power supplies have more than enough oomph to power a TD. I have an old 400 watt wired up in the shop (12 volt side) to a Nakamichi 40 WPC car cassette deck and my "enhanced" Cobra 19 CB. No power sags and the 5 volt output (for USB outlets) is redonkulous at like 20 amps. But as stated only 12 volts so no charging of 12 volt batteries. I think instructables dot com has a good tutorial on setting one up
