Is it possible, FULL RV in a 48 Sq.Ft. footprint & stay under 500Lbs wet?
SHE thinks teardrops are "cute" but I prefer a SKOSH mo-room & at 65+ the
body doesn't react/extract/move/mend/bend/lend or work like it use'ta.

Frank can take care of you. They are not the cheapest hinge but well worth it http://teardroptrailerparts.com/ looks like a 5ft piece will run ya 71 bucks with shipping x2 if that is what you need. Happy building!

OUCH! . . . $71 for one?
Those plastic hinges are more palatable at $17.00 each. Tho I don't know their longevity. Price and weight I'd carry 2 spares anyways.
I also see Ebay has them for $45 each. Since I've never delt with Hurricane hinges before I'd be digging deep checking for quality.

I have yet to hear a person say they aren't worth it though. I have been through numerous rain storms and very windy days. Haven't had ANY leaks. 8) If you install it right it will save you $$$ in the long run in repairs and time.

I know you're right.
Budget is the main issue then ease of replacement second.
I'm keeping these hinges out in the open, just in case.
I could use metal piano hinges with a rubber cover but I know those ALL too well... (last resort).

I'm toying with the idea of a stiff plastic milk carton, cutting it in a spiral to make a long plastic hinge. Maybe do 2 layers worth. Has anyone tried this?

Look for a coveyer belt suplier in your city. These guys use fiber reinforced rubber sheet that is super tough. Years ago I found a place down from where the kids had soccer practice. Their dumpster was full of end cuts and long strips where they narrowed the belt. I thought about using one of these strips/ribbons as a waterproof living hinge. My idea used aluminum bar stock screwed on each side of the strip to secure the hinge.

These will save a bit of money:

Make sure they're about 60.34" for a tad bit of overhang.

A bunch of folks have had leaking problems with a hurricane hinge. I'm one. I bought a $60 hurricane hinge thinking it was waterproof and I figured it was a traditional solution so I spent my tightwad money. It leaked heavy dew through capillary action the first time I opened the hatch in the morning. Great... I had to put a rubber cover over the hinge to make it completely waterproof. I could have used a $15 piano hinge and got as good of performance. Search for hurricane problems/leaks and see even a seller has come up with a way to seal the hinge. Why seal a waterproof hinge? So be aware, the hinge works if it is installed on close to a vertical hatch but water can get inside when a hatch is opened as water runs back to the hinge. It is a neat design but it did not work for me.

I keep kicking myself for not getting one before he retired.

I have used three. Retired, or not, I'm fairly sure that Grant is still selling them. If I were building a fourth, I'd be knocking on his door, or at least a phone call.

It's been suggested for those that open the hatch while raining or wet with dew to apply a rubber bumper-gasket immediately below the hinge. I've never had a problem so I haven't added this.

But the problem still exists unless the baffle is beyond the upper half of the hinge, that defeats the hinges simple purpose.
I see the HH should be recessed so a rubber cover is flush with the outer surface thus begetting proper Zero Drag airfoil. Has anyone done this?
