Formerly Whitby guy

Camping in Ontario & Quebec and the Central Canadian Chapter of TearJerkers

Formerly Whitby guy

Postby Whitby xtear » Wed Dec 29, 2021 11:06 am

Hi all.
Just wanted to drop in and say Happy Holidays to everyone. Hope you are all keeping well.
I’ve had to change my log in name from ‘Whitby guy’ to ‘Whitby xtear’ to get back on the site, but it’s still me.
I see that there is very little activity on the board for southern Ontario. Just wanted to stir things up and see who’s out there.
We still get out to camp 5 or 6 times a season, often with the Southern Ontario Tearjerkers, and sometimes with friends we haven’t met yet. If you are camping when and where we are, stop by and say hi.
Going to be at Silent Lake on May 13th with a few other tearjerkers…I’m on site 140 in the silver trailer (hence the xtear). Glad to see any of the old gang from a few years ago.
Take care and try to stay warm.

Sandy, do you have any advice for a camp site on Manitoulin? I've been wanting to visit the Mississagi Lighthouse Campground but it looks like the proprietors still have it shut down. That's two summers now that they were closed and I hope they make it through the lock down mess.

Hi Tim.
No experience camping on Manitoulin, just a drive through. I read someone’s positive post about ‘Batman’s Campground’ on the east end of the island, but they too are ‘temporarily’ closed (not sure if that is winter related or Covid). Hope these places can weather this and open again…the pictures from the lighthouse campground look pretty cool.
Not much help I’m afraid…maybe someone else will chime in.

Sandy - My experience is like yours. I've been there but never camped there. I understand there are several good spots so maybe we should suggest it to the group around the camp fires at Silent Lake and then Bass Lake. Scott is so close he'd try to convince us he could swim there!

That would be great to get more information. My only trip to Manitoulin was from Espanola to South Baymouth and a trip on the Chi Cheemaun to Tobermory and return. Awesome trip. I camped at the Prov park just south of Tobermory.

The hiking trails on Manitoulin sound great as well. Someday I hope to get back if all goes well.

I was at Meldrum Bay in August 21, not only is the Mississagi Lighthouse campground closed but access to the point across the neighbouring quarry property is closed. There is a small campground beside the harbor in Meldrum Bay but it is little more than a field with a few shrubs.

The campground at Providence Bay looks good and there are a few smaller ones around Mindemoya Lake.

Hope this helps,
Kevin

Just found this post and we are in Bruce County. I am also looking for good camping spots since I (almost) finished my trailer build.
