How expensive/difficult is it to re-key locks?

Postby burlesot » Fri May 17, 2013 10:06 am

I am getting ready to add two 'hasps' to my teardrops hatch. I already have two different locks on my doors, and with this addition and the lock on the hatch handle I will have five different locks! I'm sure to lose a key on one of my journeys. This got me thinking. How tough would it be, and maybe more or equally important, how expensive would it be to key them all the 'same?'

Thanks for your guidance.

As far as I know, only locks of the same type and manufacturer can be keyed the same. You cannot, for instance, key a Master and a Yale to the same key

I somewhat in the same situation - two different door locks, one key for the locking draw bar pin, coupler lock, and coupler hitch lock, and one key for the bike lock. As far as the hatch, though, I don't lock it.

What I've done is make sure that I have three complete sets of keys with each set on a bright colored key ring and fob. One set is mine, one stays in the truck, and one is my wife's. The third set - my wife's - is for when I misplace sets #1 and #2.

If your door locks are from the same manufacturer then a call to them may get you
some matching cylinders. It worked for me.

I have 10 keys, soon to add an 11th and all of the lock keys are unique so no chance to re-key. We have two sets but the idea of adding a third set might be a good idea. I have not lost a set of keys for a very long time, but...

What Carl said is exactly right. A locksmith might be able to come up with a solution for you, but it would involve buying all new locks from the same manufacturer. To get a padlock that uses the same key as your house lock would probably involve going with a "professional grade access control system," which is locksmith jargon for "Time to make this month's mortgage payment off of this guy."
