New (to me) flooring option -- Luxury Vinyl Planks

Postby VijayGupta » Wed Apr 10, 2013 8:42 pm

I got the current (May 2013) Family Handyman magazine today. There is a nice article on luxury vinyl flooring planks and how to install. They gushed over ease of installation, waterproof, and high wear. Not on their web site, yet, but they do tend to post things there. Sounds like a great TD flooring material.

A lot of libraries carry FH magazine.

If it ain't broke, fix it till it is

I can't vouch for the above, but I installed the Allure product in my home this past September and have had no problems. I researched the Allure product before I made my purchase. Years ago when it was first introduced, it was crap (buckling, glue not strong enough, bad smell, etc.).

Here in Texas, my floor has experienced the extremes of temperatures. It is still intact and it looks great. It is not suggested that it be used in trailers though. Since it is a floating flooring, it is easy enough to remove if you do install it and don't like it. One thing to think about is that "initially" there is out-gasing from the the material which smells. This subsides in about a week or so with airation. That said, if you put it in your teardrop, do not expect to sleep in it the next day.

Not everybody will have their bed always covering the floor. Some will have them fold up into couch mode. ;) My floor will be around 5'x12'. Some of my floor will be exposed for walking on all the the time, other parts will be exposed or not depending on if the bed is in bed or couch mode. I expect I'll be needing waterproof in the kitchen and bathroom areas, but may just make it all waterproof. I've been looking at using some heavy weight vinyl tiles.

I also have used the Allure flooring , am 100 % satisfied with the product & will be using it again soon .I installed 300 sq ft of it in a heavily traveled apartment kitchen about 4 years ago . It was very easy to install , it is waterproof , it looks good & has held up well over the 4 years . There are no adhesives to put down as it is free floating & is easy to pull up should you want to replace it . There aren't many waterproof floor coverings out there .Just my experience , have a GREAT day ...............
