Tile in a Teardrop?

Postby sabrown82 » Sun Jun 02, 2013 10:02 pm

Has anyone ever put tile in a teardrop? Does it hold up? I'm wondering if the vibration of travel would result in cracking....or it just all coming down. I would like to use tile for a backsplash around the sink.

Does anyone have any cool alternatives for a backsplash?

Hi, i just posted a response elsewhere on using polymer clay. Under vintage decorating. I'll link it tomorrow. (My kindle is limited).

I'd worry about weight....tile is heavy! I'd see if anyone has made a silicone based grout too. I would think all the movement would cause lots of cracks....

Personally, I'd stick to vinyl. Not as pretty, but it's indestructible, light, and easy to work with...

Celtic- I saw your post. Thanks for the idea. It sounds interesting and I'd be curious to see how it comes out, however; I don't think I'm the type of person who could sit around making clay tiles. :)

Gerry- I'm not so much worried about weight as this will likely be towed with an F-150 and the teardrop sits on an old self-contained camper frame. The frame was torn down and modified for this build. It's rugged and sturdy. I'm more curious as to whether the effect of travel will be a broken mess on my wall.

Here is a thread on this subject from about a year ago that may give you some good info:

Thanks les45! I was doing a search through the forums and didn't come up with that thread! That's exactly what I needed to know!

I think if you install with an epoxy grout you would be ok. I plan on doing a few mosaic insets in my next build but won't start the build for a few more months. You might email some of the companies and get the correct info.

I put 2x2 stone tiles on my galley counter.

Instead of grout, I used a colored and sanded caulk. It was a pain to use and dried rather quickly but my thinking is that it would be much less susceptible to cracking.

It's been 4 years now and not a single crack. It's very durable and I can set hot pans on it with no problems.

I was wondering why the water balloon was getting bigger... and then it hit me.
