The result of constant rain

Postby Kody » Tue Jun 11, 2013 9:12 am

I have finally been able to start mowing the grass again. The heavy rain has gone and the grass is now at an insane height. It has been impossible to mow as the ground has been underwater for some weeks and the soil became extremely soft and boggy. Once the rain and water have cleared, the grass grows as shown in the photo. The boundary of the property is in front of the thick trees in the background. We have mowed about eight acres and have another three or four to do. The rest can stay as it is until Spring when it will be burnt off. I also had to hunt around for a new engine for the ride-on as the original had seized up. The worst thing has been the damage to my back earlier this year and it is only now that I can say it is beginning to heal. It's been very difficult to crawl on hands and knees and weld a trailer frame and drill holes but I wont let anything get me down. I hope to now restart building in great earnest and have the TD ready for travel in Spring. Even using the computer for longer than ten or fifteen minutes has been a difficult process but I am now back to "press the keys'.
The grass has also produced a grass called "Speargrass". This stuff is the most insane evil stuff there ever is on a property. The seeds penetrate into Kody's fur and into her body causing great pain and eventually death. I missed finding three of them and had to take her to the vet for surgery to remove them. We examine her every evening but we still missed some.
The next step in building the TD is the bolting down of the floor bearers onto the frame. When this is completed, the floor goes down and the walls will be cut and fitted. I can't wait to start.

This is me on the ride-on mower last Saturday. The grass is over 4 feet high and hides some fallen branches and a few logs.
I have not found any snakes as I cut the grass and hope not to.

you might find someone with goats. they will cut it down to size for you. I know some companies and schools do it that way as a "green way" of yard maint.

We would love to put some goats on the property but we don't have goat "proof" fences. It's easy to tell if there is a snake where I mow. The blades make a "thwuump" sound and the snake can be instantly seen coming through the discharge guide chute. It is very much reorganized but still recognizable as a snake that was. A similar sound is produced when a cane toad is discharged.

Wish you could send some of that rain to Southwest Kansas, we are in our 3 year of draught! It is like there is a bubble over us, it starts raining in Colorado but as soon as it gets close to us it breaks up and goes around us. I would love to have grass, but can't waste the water.
