Confused about platform end pieces

Postby DoctahDeane » Mon Aug 12, 2013 5:57 pm

I have both Fredericks's and Kuffel Creek plans and put together a 5x8 NT trailer. Used 1x4 poplar for platform frame and have 1/4" birch ply cut and ready to attach, also insulation on hand. I was looking at the Wyoming Woody build journal and he has an end piece that hangs below the platform, front and bak ends which makes it look like the entire platform is actually longer than 8 feet so I am confused. Before I attach platform to the trailer I want to make sure it is ready to accept the sides and the curve of the top. I built the platform 61" wide so that I would have 1/2 inch each side to fit in the sidewall and to accommodate a queen size mattress but like I said, seeing those end pieces through me for a bit of a loop. As you can tell I am most definitely a newbie! Thanks for any advice

My TD will have an end piece at both ends. These pieces are cut on an angle to conform with the curve of the outer plywood sheet/s where they blend into the two bottom ends. The inserted piece/s is bolted (or glued/screwed) onto the end of the frame. This allows the outer plywood to flare into the final shape at the bottom of the trailer at both ends. The end pieces can be any size you like, thick and chunky or sized to form an edge to fasten the plywood onto. Keep in mind that the "pocket" so formed at the lowest point can/will be a water trap and you can lose any articles that may fall down there. For this reason the end pieces on my TD will be made from 3" x 1 1/2" all glued and sealed with epoxy. When I get more time, I will post a drawing of how I will do this unless you need a drawing straight away.
