How much do you figure it costed you to build YOUR teardrop?

Postby tscarbroughdc » Thu Sep 05, 2013 2:58 pm

Im about half way through my build...I just placed an order today for all lights and the PD4045 and a fantastic vent. So far I figure that I have around $1600.00 in my teardrop and Im not even done with it yet! I still have to buy more luan and paint and a few other small things...Im guessing Ill end up in my teardrop camper for around $2000.00! Does that seem about right to yall?

I wonder how much I REALLY saved building this thing on my own, although part of the reason I built it was because I wanted to do it just for funsies and Ive really had a good time so far!

But just curious...Does 2k seem about right for a standard teardrop? What do you have in your teardrop?

I have about $3100.00 in this 5' x 9' teardrop I am currently working on. My first 2 teardrops where about $1500 to do and it has seamed to have double in price since my 2002 and 2005 teardrops. I think mainly because on the first two I used parts like windows and stoves, sinks lights from our local RV salvage yard and the parts are not there anymore. Have to buy elsewhere and shipping is high now.

I made an Excell sheet to keep a record of ALL my expenses. The costs are added together automatically as I enter each item and the total/s is displayed at the bottom of the column. I have a column for all the parts and a second column next to it for all the extra tools I have had to buy. Every screw, drill, glue, tin of paint, every sheet of ply, welding rods, sand paper, grinding wheels or whatever, is accounted for. When the TD is finished, I can post what the final (and very accurate) figure has been in the cost of building. It's an excellent way to keep track of all the expenses.

If I had to make a guess at the cost of building my 5X10 teardrop, I would estimate that I have around $3500 in it. It is steel framed, aluminum sided, RV rubber on the roof and the interior is done mostly in birch beadboard paneling. I try not to keep up with the total I spend on my toys, that just takes so much of the fun out of playing :o

I bought tools as well as materials, and since I was learning as I went, I did lots of things more than once. I spent $800 just on shelter to work under. I also didn't try to save money, and I'm convinced that I could have bought a TD for less than it cost to build one. But like slowcowboy said, for some people it becomes a work of art, or at least of cabinetry, and my cabin and galley furniture is maple and cherry. Knowing what I know now, I could definitely build one less expensively, and lighter, if I did it again, but saving money wasn't really my goal anyway.
If it isn't broke, perhaps a more expensive tool is required to break it....
