Front edge of profile - how best to do this?

Postby DoctahDeane » Tue Sep 10, 2013 4:31 pm

OK folks, I have been doing lots of reading, have my platform all done (Build Journal: The Doctor's Inn) and ready to attach to the frame. I understand (generally) spars, and how the trailer will get built but before I connect the platform to the trailer I am struggling with one fairly important detail. Looking at the Benroy plans, the solution is easy (well, maybe not EASY but clear): the profile runs right down tot he front edge of the trailer, nice 90 degree angle. I have nothing agains the Benroy but I really like the curved egg shape of many teardrops so I am not clear about how the profile should work with this front edge. Should I attach a 1x4 to the front edge of the platform to cover the trailer frame? If so, how am I attaching the sides and working the sparring down to that front edge of the trailer? Or, do I make the profile a bit longer than 8 feet....say 8 feet 6 inches for the sake of argument so the edge of the trailer is hidden? I have the Kuffle Creek plans and the Steve Frederick's plans but this one issue is preventing me from forging ahead. I am happy to do more reading and not looking to be spoon fed here but I can't seem to figure out that from part of the trailer. The back is fine, I ran a 1x4 across and the hatch will attach to and cover it, so no issue there. Thanks for any advice.

I'm not 100 percent sure I understand your question, but here's a link to my build journal: viewtopic.php?f=50&t=47926. I built sort of from the Kuffel Creek plans although in truth, mostly all I used directly was the profile measurements. But as I understand you, you just want to see the work in progress t see how we did it?

Best,

If it isn't broke, perhaps a more expensive tool is required to break it....

Thank you, Mike and I'll learn a lot from your build journal. The pictures help. I was concerned about whether I should cut the front of my platform at an angle and if I did that at this point, part of the top of the frame would then be 1. exposed and 2. a place for water to pool. I can see from the pics how the profile goes along the edge of the platform, so I guess it must wrap around the underside, otherwise there'd be a gap between the front of the profile and the front of the trailer. I'll be better off if I mock something up in 1/4" plywood, I'm sure. Of course now, I am dreaming of a 10 foot long version but I have a 5x8 trailer and the platform is all built and insulated and undercoated so ....onward. Thanks for helping me out, Mike.
