Teardrop Wall Construction Question

Postby bcrosstx » Thu Feb 20, 2014 4:35 pm

Considering a my first Teardrop Build.

Was considering using 3/4" MDO Plywood walls to be skinned on interior and exterior with 1/4" or 1/8" birch.

However, this may be overkill and present problems when fitting windows.

Would appreciate thoughts typical/acceptable wall widths.

Many thanks

I used 1"x2" and 1"x3" pine board frame with 3/4" foam insulation between and skinned inside and out with 1/8" plywood. The walls are plenty strong and light weight and quiet.

You can go with the 3/4 MDO and just make lots of cutouts and fill with foam and skin with 1/8" plywood or you can leave walls solid 3/4" solid MDO without any skins needed. All methods are doable and well documented on the forum builds. I think it just depends on your skills, time, and if you care about weight (most are).

I think you can work around the windows, depending on what type you are using. I installed a RV type sun roof without trim ring and it worked fine. If your walls are thin you can also shim out for doors and windows.

I think you're on the right track of you cut a bunch of hollows out of your 3/4". Take a look at Grant's build over here: https://www.facebook.com/teardrops.net
That guy has built more teardrops than I'll ever see.

The big advantage of MDO is the limited weatherproofing you need to do vs conventional plywoods. If you're going to cover it in birch, you might as well use conventional plywood for the core and CPES/fiberglass everything, because you'd need to do that anyway to protect the birch.

No wood working tools, glue, calking, etc. required........and no sawdust to clean up????? :D

I agree, if you want to cover the outside with nice ply, use an exterior grade ply and coat it with something. I used 3 thick coats of Spar varnish on ours. I just used 5/8 ply with 5/8 strips on the inside and then 1/4 birch. I used foam in the voids of the 5/8 ply strips for insulation. The walls are plenty strong. The MDO is a lot more expensive than the exterior grade plywoods.
