Well, mine isn't a tear. It's built in a wedge shape instead. At my feet, the height is 30" At my head, it's just under 40". That's a little taller than I would have liked to build, but the height was dictated by the used camper shell door I bought.

Hey, Slow,
My modified Campster 12 is really just an oversized standard TD. (6-1/2' x 12') I have about 5'-4" inside due to 4" dropped floor. My wife can stand in it, I need to "duck" a little. I'm 5'-6" +. I cut my exterior walls 5-1/2 ft. tall and covered the frame. I just made an 18" tall piece the full length of the trailer rear half on both sides. Then a 4x 8 sheet on top of that. Then put the 4x8 sheet standing "up" for the front 4' piece. (3 sheets/ side)
The main reason I did this was so the wife could sit in a bag chair or what ever and read, etc. if weather was really lousy. She did not want to be forced to lay down all the time like in our old 4x8 cubby.

I've been thinking of building a standy but I could get by with something like a tall weekender with a narrow, elevated bunk so I could sit on the edge of the bunk with my feet on the floor. My situation is unique though as I'd been living out of the trailer for longer periods of time than most of y'all.

I'd say that you aren't ready to start cutting any materials until you have some of the design worked out more completely. A poorly thought out plan makes for wasting materials. Doug

Slow, why don't you let Angie draw up the design and stipulate the height and length? Let her do the research so she knows the what and whys of it all. That way, the pressure is off of you and she'll know that she has as close to what she wants as she can get. Then, negotiate things if there is something that she dreams up that doesn't allow you what you need or that won't work well because of some other reason. After all, if it was for you, you would stick with what you already have.

my tear sidewalls are 4 feet from the tear floor to the roof, on the outside. (full width of the sheet sitting on top of the trailer deck) this makes my tear slightly taller than my car, and the same height as my van. I can't see that you would need any more height above the bed. add windows and mirrors to keep the inside from feeling tight. (Boeing has spent a TON of money on aircraft interiors recently to make the same size jet look bigger and airier inside, rows of indirect LED's washing onto a layered ceiling, along with blue tints to give the suggestion of blue sky, actually work great)
we love our interior space, part of which comes from a larger outside shape like the Benroy. When I look at smaller more rounded designs they look cramped to me.
Lights, (we have a dimmable rope light as our interior light in the tear, it gives good light without glaring or shadow casting) light colors inside, and windows will make any smaller space look bigger.

Hey Slow,

I've got about 42" of interior height where we sit against the front cabinets in our trailer. With the 6" of mattress and bedding I've got about 3" of clearance. In the middle of the trailer I've got about 5" or more and have never hit my head on the ceiling. What I like about 4' high walls is that inside the cabin I can reach the fan controls and lights with ease. The 4' height works great for us and I'm 6'2" tall.

All the Best,

Dave
