I understand that the Russian fireplace was just a suggestion! No problem. But after I saw the images online I noticed that that was very close to what I was thinking about anyway! It was nice to see that I was on the right path and that others do that "type" of set up too. No decisions have been made yet.

If your upstairs gets to be too much there are solutions for that too! You know, the chair that rides up the stairs, or just adapt your downstairs for all of your living (keeping the upstairs for storage, not as much up and down). I know you would be giving up a lot of space doing that, but you might not want to be moving around as much either? :NC

I am hopefully a long way from it being a problem… if ever.. and while it would be a little work I could add a kitchen downstairs somewhere, or add a bathroom up here.

YEP! I think most houses are able to be adapted to our later years!

There have been some comments about tiny houses being impractical. Many of them are. It seems that there is often an assumption that a tiny house will also be a portable house. However, that isn't always the case. And, by giving up portability, and connecting to regular power, water and septic, you gain a lot of options for practicality. Here are a few pictures of a tiny house that I created last year, by renovating a shed on my property. This little house is 225 square feet, and has a kitchen, living room, bathroom, shower and bedroom area. It is fully equipped for full-time living, and is really a pretty comfortable place.

I have some distant relatives that live in a motor home, they own or rent a lot and have a small building with laundry area and a guest bedroom it also has the hook ups for their utilities. when hurricane season arrives, or the "spirit moves", they disconnect and head out of FL. drive until they find a good spot to live, then find part time jobs. after hurricane season winds down they head back 'home". An interesting way to live, but one that would make a small living area easier to live in, for me.

Mojava Bob, That is a neat looking house. I live in a house that is way to big for me. I have started to call it "A three junk room house". I have threatened so many times the past 30 years or so to get rid of my junk but those are my kids. Oh, I also have a good size shop full of tool, tools, and more tools. And motorcycles

I feel like my junk is controlling me.

Thanks! This was the most fun project I have tackled in years. We live in an area with many little lakes, and it is a popular fishing area. This "shed" started life in the 1940s, as the original "cabin" on the property -- a little 8x8 fishing cottage. It was later expanded to 8x16, and eventually became its present size (I figured out this history by looking at the "bones" during the renovation. We bought the property in 1996). Then, in 1957, a new house was built on the property, and this little cottage became a garden shed and a playroom for our daughter while she was growing up. It was in pretty bad shape by the time I started on it last year, but it held way too much history to tear down. I had a ton of fun figuring out how to use the space to make it modern, while preserving the historic nature of it. I could easily move into this place to live. There isn't a lot of square footage, but it really doesn't feel cramped inside at all.

Randy -- I know what you mean about stuff controlling you. In 1992, we lived in a 2600 square foot 4BR/3Bath house. It was pretty much full. We moved down to a 1300 square foot house, which the realtor didn't want to show us because it was "too small". We loved it, and auctioned off a ton of stuff. We now live in a 990 square foot house (with an 800 square foot shop/garage underneath), and don't feel any lack of space. I have my eye on a 550 square foot place that I think would do just fine for us. Every time we downsize, we jettison more stuff, and we feel that much freer and better.

You ever see those "idea" rooms at Ikea? Those rooms fit EVERYTHING you could possibly want in 200 and some odd sq ft. At this point in our lives 200 some odd sq ft wouldn't even hold my daughters medical supplies! LOL But SOMEDAY!!!
