One off trailer by MINI

Postby mallymal » Mon May 19, 2014 4:46 pm

Don't know if this ever reached your side of the pond, but MINI designed a teardrop trailer and also a roof tent... Not sure whether it was just promotional... Some said an April fool... But they're not for sale.

Beautifully made jobs...

Look at that seal detail... Love the way the outer edge trim is one uninterrupted length, and the galley seal is inset.

anyone here do that?

Looks a nice alternative to notching the side.....

Cheers everyone, and once again a big thank you for all those inspirational builds I've been enjoying for years. I'm slowly grinding my wife down, so maybe, just maybe, one day she'll let me build one... Hell no, HELP me build one ;)

You won't see it on this side of the pond, at least not via MINI USA, because in the USA, no MINI model is rated to tow a trailer.

You see, physics works differently when you cross the ocean.

(No, really, the MINI USA legal team is afraid Americans will do something stupid and sue the company.)

We have a Clubman S and I'd like to someday put on a hitch and build a small tear to tow behind.

Hey, don't mind me - I tow mine with an '05 Scion xB, which has even less power than a MINI. But it also doesn't have a warranty. I keep hearing anecdotal evidence of dealers refusing warranty service when they see a hitch on something that isn't rated to tow.

Actually, I believe this is a re-badged Little Guy Silver Shadow with EU-spec lighting:

The profile, side doors and galley layout seem identical.

Dealers have been known to try and buffalo their way out of warranty based on vehicle modifications. There is US case law that indicates the modification must cause the damage before the dealer can void warranty. Ie. having a tow bar installed will not cause the vehicle air conditioning to fail, therefore the dealer can not claim void warranty. On the other hand, having a tow bar installed and claiming warranty repair for ruined rear shocks and struts, may not be covered.

The 4WD club I belong to has run into this several times. Local dealer denies warranty. Escalated call to regional dealer manager or manufacturers representative, then local dealer honors warranty. Each time the warranty was upheld as long as the damage was not directly due to the modification.

True, but... I once bought a brand-new car that was built with a defective engine. The engine grenaded itself at 6600 miles. It happens. But let's say it happened in a MINI. Dealer sees the hitch, says "you were towing, which is not recommended" and you get to buy a new engine out of your own pocket.

A Camp Inn customer tows their teardrop with a MiniClubman. So far over 10,000 miles.

If a dealer EVER tells you this, complain to higher-ups. Hitches can be used for things other than towing - bike racks for example.

tow ratings are over rated, my 2001 focus had a 200/2000 tow rating, my 2012 focus doesn't, stupid, the older car was 1,000 lbs lighter than the new one. makes no sense to me.
