GPS Data Logger - Anyone have any experience with these?

Postby Solstice » Thu Jul 03, 2014 8:57 am

A good friend just had her TD stolen. I am thinking of installing a GPS data logger and would like tips from anyone who has installed one.

I used them to catch crooks in a previous life. Almost all (except perhaps the SPOT TRACE device –which I believe transmits directly to their satellite) uses both cell phone and GPS systems. The cell phone system transmits the location of the device to the provider that you pay a monthly subscription service to. You can get models that are hard wired to your battery. Without hard wiring, you may get three weeks depending on how good the cell reception is. Most installations are done on the undercarriage and both signals (GPS and cell) are probably bouncing off the pavement. Some hard-wire installations are done inside taillights. I assume you'd get good GPS and cell service inside an aluminum clad 'drop.

I think theft insurance and a good hitch lock (or wheel lock) are going to be much cheaper. I'd sure be sick if mine were taken.
