Transporting thin aluminum sheet

I need to re-skin my roof. I've found a source for 4x10 sheet of .025 aluminum. $34 seems fair.

Problem is, I have no way to transport it flat.

If my math is good, I can roll it in to a 3' diameter tube. Times 4' wide, it will fit in my vehicle.

But will I bone myself by doing that? will I ever be able to get it reasonably flat again?

I have been wondering how to transport a 1/4 inch sheet of ply wood too ......My brother suggested that I put it on the side of my trailer using some straps over the top to hold, making a sling then put two straps together to go around the trailer to secure the front and back.........I don't know if it will work but I am going to try!!! I am not sure how aluminum will work but maybe laying over the top and strapping it down???

Only certain grades of aluminum can be rolled and naturally return to the flat state. Aircraft grades, 2024-T3 and 6061-T6 can be rolled and shipped with no issue. However, 5052 and 3003 does not return flat very well once it has been rolled. I would suggest finding someone with a trailer that could handle that size of aluminum. You can order aircraft grades at various venders online but the cost will be much higher than you quoted.

Yeah, all the thin stuff available locally is 5052. Rats. And you're right. for what online shipping should cost me, I could go rent a U-haul van and get it home cheaper. Grrr.

I have transported .032 and .040 4' by 10' sheets rolled up as you describe several times for teardrops. Never had a problem with it taking some kind of a set. Used it on both the top and sidewalls and it lies flat.

Not only did the 4x10 sheet of .025 roll up just swell, the guys at Curtis Steel rolled it up for me like it's something they do all the time. They even held the roll with some bailing wire, so it wouldn't unroll.

So there you go.

Curtis is great. I bought all my aluminum skin from them and most of my trim.
