This post is about bears, but it does take a slight detour from talking about bear spray. I think this link has been posted before, but I still find it interesting.

What bears will do to get something they want.
There was another post in this forum somewhere where the poster showed where a bear tried to get into a trailer.
Now I ask, what would you really do if a bear was this intent to get inside your trailer, TD or CT while you were in it?
Curl up in a ball, make noises to scare him, spray bear spray from inside the trailer (probably a very bad thing to do) or use your gun (another probably bad thing to do). If this happens, You are going to have to make some sort of decision.
Me, I chose not to be a victim but I honestly cannot give an absolute answer what I would do. Only the actual incident would tell.

Well, I would like to think if I knew it was a bear invading my trailer there would be no doubt. Six .454 rounds from the BFR or seven .45 ACP from the 1911 SA, depending on what firearm I was feeling partial to that day/evening.

Bullets that go up also come down someplace. Better is to discharge into the ground, as long as the ground is not mostly large rock as we don't want ricochets either. A very large tree, depending on caliber would also work.

Here in NM every New Years in particular people 'celebrate' by firing guns into the air. It's illegal as well as potentially cangerous. But alcohol soaked celebrants can't seem to fathom the danger. No one here has been killed becuase of it (that I know of) but there have been a few roof penetrations reported over the 30 years I've been here.

Here is an interesting and easy to understand explanation why you would not want to shoot up in the air.....supporting MtnDon's comment.

Then I am sure the explanation on what happens if it were fired at an angle ( more likely the case I believe) would get much more complicated.
