Any Manufacturered clamshell design sleeper trailer

Postby 123jay » Tue Sep 30, 2014 11:01 pm

I plan to make a clamshell design sleeper of some kind. Was there ever a Manufacturer that ever built one.I have seen grant,s
stomperxj drawings The packman .
What I am look for one that was built by a manufacture just as a sleeper. So may be I can find something to restore
Thanks

Mid 80's Coleman Versa trailer was something like that. Options were a flip up top and camper canvas. I own one with the top but don't have the canvas option. Maybe Gage can find a picture. I have an original sales brochure.

That trailer from Wood Wind Caravans that Gage shows was at a rally in the Adirondaks of NY a few years ago. They were from Connecticut. Haven't seen it since or heard anything about them. The company makes furniture and decided to make a little camper out of wood that they had left over. I think this one may have been their 3rd prototype. It was very nicely done. The Coleman Versa was a clever design. Has a front and rear tailgate, 5 foot long box that is just over 4 feet wide so that with both gates down a sheet of plywood would lay in it. Options were the plastic top, wood side racks, and camper canvas that attached to the top with it flipped up so that it covered the sides and extended off the back. The top was not fiberglass but some type of plastic, ABS maybe. Mine had cracks when I got it and I repaired it with fiberglass cloth and resin and stiffened it with some wood ribs as it was really flexible. I'm guessing the canvas option is really rare. At the same time I bought my Versa on ebay another seller had the original brochure listed so I got that. How's that for good timing!

That reminded me of the folks who make the Versa trailer. http://www.versatrailer.us/

Found them via this site. http://www.sporttrailer.co/
Scroll down the page and you will see this clamshell camper looking item:

The top on it looks like the ones on the Teal modular campers:

Considering the cost of the trailer from Versa & the roof section from Teal, it would be too pricey, IMO. It is still an interesting amalgamation.

Edit: Notice the tail feather logo on the side panel. You might contact Teal to see if they made that camper.

Coleman only made their Versa trailer for a few years in the 80's. Apparently the idea is still being used by others.

Thank you for every one that posted. I think I will try to find a used Versa trailer I been told that Sears sold them for a time.
I just had my septic tank installed. It looks like the new Versa trailer.
I believe the last trailer that I tried to build would be too heavy.
To get to the top of the hill where we are building will be just a mud road soon. And just have a Honda atc 110 to pull with. You can not have much out there with out someone shooting at it.

Sears may have sold a smaller version of Coleman's Versa. I've seen a couple real small trailers for sale that looked like one of those roof top carriers on wheels, that may be what Sears sold. But you never know, they've sold cars under their name, pop-up campers, and even houses. The house next to us is a Sears house.

Here's one for motorcycles and small cars that weighs just 255 pounds.

http://leesurelite.com/

It looks like a small version of the Coleman Minuteman tent camper from the '70's.
