Air Foil design

Postby Waksupi » Wed Oct 22, 2014 1:37 am

I'm pondering profile design. Has anyone done any consideration of the most efficient air foil design for a tear drop? Maybe body aerodynamics would be a better word.

I am out of my area of expertise here, but I would guess that it totally depends on the tow vehicle, as well as a number of different factors. To the purist, the goal would not be to create the most aerodynamic trailer, but to create a trailer that best complements the specific aerodynamics of the specific tow vehicle. Then, to get really OCD about it, you would have to factor in what load will be in the tow vehicle, for ride height, and where you will drive, as the aerodynamic profile of the tow vehicle changes depending on wind strength and direction. And so on. On the whole, I would guess (and this is just a guess) that the trailing edge profile of the trailer is as important than the leading edge, assuming the trailer is small enough (we are talking tttnt here) to mostly hide behind the profile of the tow vehicle.

BobHenry, actually, a late friend had one that looked very similar to that, he would take to the Bonneville Salt Flats every year for Speed Week.
