Teardrop camping in Bear country

Postby Barak » Tue Nov 11, 2014 9:10 pm

This has never been an issue for me since I have been a tent camper until now and food has always been stored away and in a locked truck, but It just occurred to me that sleeping so close to where food is stored and/or prepared in bear country is a somewhat disturbing thought - considering how relatively easy it would be for a hungry bear to rip open a hatch.
Any thoughts or experiences would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Barak

When we're in bear country and there are bear boxes in the campsites, we use them! ... if there aren't any bear boxes, we keep the smelly foods locked in the car or truck. In all the years I've been camping in all kinds of country, I've never had a problem with bears trying to get into the 'drop ... and I've had them come through the campsite many times!

LOL len19070 that's the best sign ever

Unless you know someone who was eaten by a Grizzly Bear

I too am leary of camping in bear country with food. Though it sounds like there's little to fear. This year I was at a campground that said if a bear approaches your campsite and you have food out to stand your ground by making lots of noise (banging pots together) and looking large :frightened:

Depends on the type and temper of the bear.

It's been years since I've camped where there weren't bears. We frequently camp (and fish) in grizzly country. The cooler stays in the galley with the lid shut. On extended trips, there could be a second cooler under the Tacoma's bed topper with the door shut. The dogs sleep in the back seat of the Tacoma. The garbage goes in the topper. We keep a clean camp and a can of bear spray in the 'drop (and no, I'm not going to pop the cork while inside).

If we're in grizzly country and I get up to pee in the middle of the night, I sweep the area with a bright flashlight before I enjoy the stars ('cause I once sat through the entire Night of the Grizzly).

I don't consider bears a problem. Something to keep in the back of my mind, but not a big issue. Hazard trees? Now there's something that'll get my attention when eyeballing a campsite.
