Benroy galley question?

Postby tdprice54 » Sat Nov 29, 2014 8:02 am

I hope everyone had a safe and happy Thanksgiving. I know I did. I am drawn between putting my galley back together with 90% of the original Benroy pieces versus just making a nice galley. I have the original aluminum counter top , back splash and side pieces, cabinet doors and hardware, and original sinkand original stove. All the original pieces are in nice restorable condition. Sometimes I want to use the pieces and sometimes I want to update it. Opinions?

What would you upgrade? How would you change it? Could some of that be done with the original pieces in there?

Have read much about the "Sink Debate"
Personally we use our stove away from the Galley (because who wants that bacon grease splashing all over your galley) and a sink means lose of Galley counter space and under counter storage.......plus there is everything else that is required for a sink?
Faucet, pump, fresh water tank, drain, grey water tank, etc. etc.
Galley works well as a food preparation area, with all your stuff within arms reach. Stove works well off to one side of the TD or the other, or out the back, Wash sink works well on a portable camp table ( we have the Coleman folding table available from Coleman for $39.99 and just love it)! Sandi also has a fold up wash and rinse sink (clear plastic...weighs nothing) that I think we found in Cabella's.
All this works Great for us????

I guess the biggest question is: How will YOU be happy? After all, you're putting in the effort on that project.

I don't know how to post pictures or I would. The sink is on the left side of the counter, stove on the right. I have the original aluminum skin that covered the counter. On the left side in front of the sink I have a folding stainless steel table that folds down [24x24]. Below the sink I have a door where I store a water jug. On the right below the stove I will have a sliding shelf for an igloo cooler behind the original "Ice Box' door. I will have doors on the top that enter the cabin in the shelf area. You can accesss from inside or the galley. I also have a porcelian 32"x32" Corona table that attaches to either side above the fenders. If I change I am going to use a stainless steel propane powered stove that has a lid or cover for it that is portable and no sink.. I will re-deck the counter top most likely in an "Austin Chalk " type counter top tile and grout the joints. I will then clean up my cabinet doors and build nicer doors instead of trying to use the originals. I will use beaded board for cabinet fronts. Just can't decide if I want to keep original look or newer country style cabinets.

How will I be happy? Thats easy. It doesn't matter. If I don't like one I'll tear out and try the other.

If I had an opportunity to have "an original" I would make it as nearto the original as possible. I would use as many old parts that could be repaired, cleaned up, and shined up. The little things and other parts can be updated as necessary. Just my thoughts.

Mary, that is the direction I'm leaning right now because I have everything but the original water storage tank. I cannot find a picture of one either or I might fabricate it. I am going to lengthen the tongue however. The trailer has been painted a dark blue in the past and the skin is a little ruff to strip and polish out. I will evetually build a new on but want to use this some before I start another. I am running a 1959 RV tag on it also.
