standie/tin can

Postby Greg Barrick » Fri Nov 28, 2014 2:13 pm

have been a lurker here for years. Love it. On my 2nd tear drop. A 6-1/2 x 12 kind of a campster 12. But have been interested for years in a small standee or canned ham. (They used to be on this sight.)
Anyway, after a lot of searching, I really havn't found any building plan or ideas of building a canned ham except for the Wetzeldorf and a couple of gypsy wagons. I do kinda like the gypsy wagons, but the square front for long hauling is a turn off. I'm not real fond of the idea of rebuilding a rotted out canned ham. But since I have a fairly new camper frame and axel, I'd be interested in building a new 12'-13' canned ham.
Anyone have any ideas where I should look? Someone MUST have built a homemade travel trailer. Where are they hiding? I'm 65, retired, live in the middle of travel trailer manufacturers of the world. I can get parts fairly cheap, (windows, doors, cabinets, etc.) Would just love to find a little more info in construction of a "retro" canned ham build.

Building a canned ham is pretty much like building a teardrop, except bigger. Find a shape that you like, trace it out and and start building. I used the aluminum off of an old Shasta for my pattern.

Anything that you build will probably be waay better built than a factory built canned ham.

Here're Some small TTs to TTTs builds links:

A favorite, no build journal per se but here's Carter's Album RE: his 'Big Drop'
gallery/album.php?album_id=973&sk=t&sd=d&st=0
A nice build:

One of Doug Hodder's builds:

Aother of Doug's:

Another:

This would be a fun one to replicate - it has a murphy bed in it!
viewtopic.php?f=53&t=41702
Too big, but it's one helluva home build:

Smaller sized TT with slide-out:
viewtopic.php?f=50&t=43328
Very nice garagable:
viewtopic.php?f=50&t=40591
A standy:
viewtopic.php?f=50&t=55017&start=135

There's a build of about 14-16ft small TT [Not really a canned ham,
but more of a modern profile design.] ,that's extremely well done,
and very well documented, built by a guy with his brother's occasional help.
I can't recall his name, or the build's name unfortunately, maybe someone else
can help out with that.

Cheers,

Thank you guys so much. Made it sound really easy. Guess I'll start coming up with a design so I can start a build in the spring. I'll use my campster 12 'till I at least get this "standee" done. Of course, the wife will want 10lbs of s... in a 5 lb bag and I want about as basic and simple as can be built. I have lots of camping gear that is quite useable in place of built in appliances etc.
I have a shower & shitter from a pick-up camper, but don't really want to install it. It's more work and weight, then I'll need the water tank, plumbing, water heater, pump, holding tank etc. I can't see hauling 2500 lbs of water, poop and a bathroom across multible states. Every McDonalds on every corner has a bathroom. Most campgrounds (where my wife would go) have showers. Plus, :) a bathroom takes a lot of space.http://

Hey Greg, check out my SunShineInn, similar to my Whetzedorfs, just longer. The profile is from a 1958 Metzendorf.
http://www.tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?f=50&t=56896. Standies are just as fun and interesting to build as teardrops. You will have to either splice plywood together or stick build your walls, as well as find a source for wider aluminum.

Also, here is a clone of a 1959 Scotty rear door I am currently building
