I built a back porch on my camper!

Postby Gold5one » Thu Feb 19, 2015 3:11 pm

I didn't plan on doing one, but my new cargo platform sure makes a nice porch seat. Sparky would prefer that I tack down some indoor/outdoor carpeting. I guess I have crossed the line :FNP and added a feature from a gypsy caravan or a caboose to my Weekender-XL. It sure is a comfortable seat that I can use at lunchtime when I'm on the road-- and there is room for a friend- 2 or 4 legged.

This porch would be hard to duplicate again, as I used the steel base frame from our daughter's pre-teen mini-futon that I dismantled before trashing it- the welded frame is, 1" sq steel tubing ( 47"x30") and 3/4" sq steel cross members and the weight is a little under 10lbs. Two years ago my wife asked why I was saving that "junk"-- Well, I'm glad I did. I used 8lbs of the lightest 5/8" x4" wooden furring strips that Lowes sells ( 11/16" thickness) for the slats and two 5/16" pieces of all-thread for the supports- the frame is bolted to the rear steel cross member with 3 bolts. I can stand on it and bounce the front of the trailer- it's strong.

Love it! Great job  I was going to make a back porch for my trailer until my pup passed away last year. No nice platform like you had to work with but I figured if I put a piece of plywood under my mattress and somehow attach short folding legs to it I could pull it out when parked and he could hang out on his own little porch out of the dirt and gravel.

I finally got out for my first little camping trip last week :D Brought a rug AND a nice chair cushion just for my dog. Where did he choose to spend his time? In the dirt and gravel, of course! A porch wouldn't have helped -- well, I would have liked it!

Stacie, if you have 2 pieces of electrical unistrut mounted under the trailer frame with the openings facing each other , 3/4" plywood will fit in the openings and you can slide it in and out- then add a couple fold down legs, as you suggested. I may do that to make a pull out step for the side entry door.
