Fitting a cooler

Postby Dalorin » Wed Mar 11, 2015 4:26 pm

I'm having difficulty understanding how anyone can fit a cooler under the counter of the galley. Assuming a standard five by eight teardrop. The queen sized mattress is six foot eight inches long. That leaves sixteen inches of trailer length. If the galley wall is 3/4 ply between the cabin you've lost almost another inch. If you figure the hatch is a few inches thick your down to about a foot of depth under the galley counter. Most 20 quart coolers are 15 inches deep. What is the secret here? Are people just crunching their mattresses a few inches?

Thanks!

I set the length of my bed at 75 inches, which is the same as a full size. ( Its also pretty standard for an RV queen). That gives you about 5 more inches. In my case, my cooler is 21 inches long and I ended up putting it sideways, because I only ended up with 15 inches between the bulk head and the ribs on the galley hatch. If you are vertically challenged you can probably shrink it even more. I'm 5'9" and I still have about an inch between my feet and the bulk head. ( and you can always sleep at an angle until your partner complains.

my 4 x 8 was just over 18 inches deep in the cooler area when I got it under my counter, I pulled out the divider wall, 3/8 thick panel, and remounted it forward 1 1/2 inch giving me almost 20inches of space for my 15inch deep x 23inch wide (15inch tall) 48 gt Igloo cooler (common Igloo/Wal-Mart $20 3 day cooler) . Made a nice slider drawer for it and still had room for a 6 gallon water jug on 1 side with a 'tall'(15 inch) Igloo lunch box cooler - 10 inch wide x 13 inch deep on the other side (use for bread-fruits-wine, whatever). My mattress is a cut down in width full size to 46 inches wide x 73 long W/M memory foam 4 inch pad - I am 5 ft 9 in. The other thing I did when I moved the divider panel was to make it "removable" for the future - I mounted a vertical 2x2 on the each side for a mounting edge along with 2x2 horizontal floor edge between these sides thus giving a good bulk head floor edge to mount my cooler slider drawer to on it's back side. My thought for making the divider panel removable was so if I ever put in a real mattress, it could be slide straight in from the back instead of trying to have to put it in threw the side door. There is room for a lot back there - it just takes some "trial and err - fitting this and that" to come up with what you can live with. This is one of those the fun-hobby type things of owning a teardrop and making it yours!!!!

Thank you all for this information. I'm glad that I asked the question. It's good to plan ahead. I will buy a full size foam mattress off of amazon. I'm six foot tall but I think I can sleep comfortably. I would like to fit a yeti or pelican cooler in the back when I'm finished. Guess we will see.

Planning to build the floor and start on the walls this weekend!

Thanks!

You need to think about it a bit. The below pic is of the galley area of a 4x8 (the only difference is the width) KIT Kamper with a 6 foot mattress in the cabin. No problem. :)

most trailers have it in the galley sideways like Gage shows above other carry it somewhere else and have a side table just outside the galley

We put a front storage rack on tongue and keep coolers there on our rentals. Use tie downs. Works really well.
