Playstation hand controls for a paraplegic ex-fireman.

Postby grizz » Fri Feb 27, 2015 6:48 am

I am not sure if this is of interest to any of you, but I know we all learn from each other, so thought sharing made sense.

My mate Martin has a friend and customer who we do little odd jobs for.

He is a paraplegic, ex fireman who lives on his own but cannot always do things for himself.

Recently I made a load of wooden spacers in Oak to raise his lounge suite by 60mm as he still drives a seriously fast Nissan GTR that he uses mainly for track days and needs to practice on the play station for various tracks he visits in the UK and Europe. So the raised furniture means he is more comfortable.

Of course, the Playstation console for car driving is made for able bodied persons only, and there is no system available for paraplegics with hand controls.

Here is a video of what Martin built for him.

I love the fact that this technically puts a disabled person back in the driving seat.

Pity there is nothing like this available out there, it was not cheap to build, but will make a difference in the life of a guy who made a difference.

This is Martins C10 truck build thread, showing some of the challenges he deals with on his build, making this look easy.

Well done Martin.

You've got my attention Grizz, that's putting your brain to good use with the hand controller. I'm amazed at what you guy's across the pond can do with limited parts resources for the yankee iron, and with what I consider room to work being very limited, I consider myself very lucky. Your work on the truck is a first class body restoration job, metal work is a true art.

The picture you posted on the 41' blown Willy's Coupe is what I consider to be the ultimate vehicle that was ever hot rodded, there is nothing more sinister looking than a blown 40' - 41' Willy's Coupe.

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the replies guys.

This is my '66 C10 build thread.

Martin is much heavier on his credit card than me, my truck is in a better shape overall but I am more cautious when it comes to random spending.

Luckily we live only 15 miles appart so with my wife and his girlfriend being quite tollerant, we get to trade skills and time often. I do woowork and bodywork reasonably and trade him for things like fitting my new wiring loom when the truck is done or extra muscle on mechanicals.

We are travelling to the USA on the 14th October for his birthday and a short road trip through Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas and probably up to North Carolina and plan on having lunch at Gas Monkey Garage Bar and Grill on the 26th which is his 50th Birthday.

Hi Brian
Sorry, just saw your reply.

I think you are correct.

Our house is no 9 of 12 in a row and due to the English's weird zoning rules etc the even numbers have a drive that is about 250mm narrower than the odd numbrrs so I can get my teardrop and truck through to the back while neighbors battle with a Nissan Micra.

Did I mention weird rules??
