more comfy bed

Postby Greg Barrick » Wed Mar 25, 2015 10:22 am

I have a wooden futon mounted crosswise in my campster 12. I have placed sheet paneling over the slats and have two futon mattresses on top. When I get up in the morning, my hips are killing me. (I have used one futon mattress in the back of the explorer w/o this happening. )
I am now going to build a full size bed frame with 1/2" ply on top and still use the 2 (or 3) futon mattresses. does anyone think this would be helpful?
Not sure I could even fold a real mattress to get thru the door.

When I do a Google image search for "futon mattress" I get lots of different prodcuts coming up. Slats? Full bed frame? I've seen pics of Grant's Campster but don't understand.

I can tell you this, we've got 5" of foam topped by two inches of memory foam and it's deluxe. As good as our super comfy mattress in our bedroom. And it goes through teardrop doors.

Why do you need the futon frame? My suggestion would be to ditch at least one of the futon mattresses and put some memory foam over the top. I'm using 6 inches of memory foam, and and its very comfy. It probably would be cheaper to just put a couple inches of memory foam over some regular high density foam, but 2 inches of my foam was free.

I've had a few futons over my life and in every case they were next to horrible. The cotton mattresses just did not work for me. For some, they love them. In this build I'm doing the same thing I had in my big trailer, a 6" foam mattress. Not fully decided if I'm going to do a plywood platform or wood slat platform, probably plywood since my galley will actually reside under my bed (weird design).

A couple of years ago I was using a futon as my bed for over a year. I was convinced that the years of carrying too much weight and a few injuries had left me with permanent chronic pain in my right hip and right shoulder and I would just have to live with it and never sleep a whole night through again. Then friends who had just purchased a memory foam mattress had to change their bedroom (husband is increasingly disabled due to an injury 30 years ago, and his physical therapist recommended a divided king sized bed with motorized attachments--basically side by side twins, one a hospital bed). I got the brand new mem-foam queen mattress.

Oh, man! Okay, I still can't sleep a whole night on my right side, but I sleep the whole night. I mean I SLEEP THE WHOLE NIGHT. What a difference!

Ditch the futon. It's for kids. Get the memory foam topper.

Catherine

But I don't have one in my camper. Bummer.

Fwiw, I originally had just 4 inches of memory foam. It did a pretty good job, but if I slept on my side, my hips, would just touch the hard floor underneath. So I think 2 inches over something firmer would be better. 6 inches works perfect for me now though.

We made our bed mattress in the teardrop...3 inch hard foam and 2 inches of memory foam on top. My daughter says it's more comfy than her bed a t home, lol. You can buy foam online or find a local place to cut you the right size.

Odds are your pile of mattresses is way to soft. You aren't getting any support, so your butt sinks in too far and your hips are taking the weight of your lower body.

You need something firmer, not deeper. IMHO.
