crossed thread dramas

Postby felixx » Sat Apr 11, 2015 9:29 pm

SO I tried fitting a door today
I am using 'House' door handles and managed to cross thread one of the two bolts that hold the handle in place

It his about 50% in and wont go any further in or out

Any suggestions?

It's spinning but not moving? If So, pry it up while turning anticlockwise, should be able to get it out. The usual door handle insides that have the threaded part inside, are some type of cheap cast metal that carves up easily. You can try retapping it, but there might not be enough metal to put a thread in any more.

A way to avoid this is to tighten each side down a little at a time, because if one side is tight, it could pull the other side out of line and then you just carve it up trying to get it threaded.

If you're determined to save the part, well I'd probably fill it up with JB Weld, drill and retap, or if I could find a matching machine screw the next size up,
and there was enough metal in the pillars in there, redrill and tap for that.

Shorter screw? If it threads in pretty far before you have a problem why not just use a screw that avoids the messed up threads? After all most teardrop doors are thinner then house doors.

Wtg on the door re hang not the cross thread; P
Not much you can do with cheap handles if you thread them.they are made of muck metal.
I've done it heaps of times in a hurry.
