Building the Angib Wander 10 with a fiberglass component kit

Postby dogscats » Wed Apr 15, 2015 5:54 pm

I been studying Angib's Wander.http://www.angib.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/teardrop/tear59.htm It has four radius on each side A R30 and R18 . The Benroy I was planing to build is much the same .Just more strait parts..I can get R30'' & R15.5'' Modular fiberglass components. If I did this I would do layout A1.
So my question is.Can I replace a R15.5 for the R18 . I know I have to make some strait parts longer. Will that hurt any thing? I know for sure I am Doing the sport.trailer . I don't think it much more to do the 10' Wander. Than the Benroy no hatch to fight with.
Has any one built a 8' are 10' Angibs Wander? Can not find anyone in the search.

I can't see any problem in making the bottom radiuses a bit tighter.

But please remember that the two 1x6 cross-members at floor level front and back are absolutely essential to the strength of the body and there needs to be a good connection between the ends of those cross-members and the sidewall, as those connections will carry much of the body weight.

With the radius fiberglass pieces, the cross-members may end on the fiberglass, not the actual sidewall and the connection may need to be extended upwards so that it lands on the sidewall. Jut using longer 1x2 cleats to make the connection would work.

Jerry's Retro-Kamper build is very similar to the Wanderer:

Thank you Angib ,Aggie79 I got a few pieces to play with . For the smaller sport trailer it seems it will just fall together.
On the bigger Wander I will worry most about cross support X in the outside shell wall .I was planing to do the two at the same time. Thinking I will get the sport trailer mostly done first. That way I can beat and push and see if there a week spot if any might be there .I will make a floor mockup to make sure the walls tie in . By doing the mock up frame if the shell turns out lighter I can go with the cheaper fold up trailer. The Modular fiberglass component kit runs about one pound a foot. They have a flat piece that 5'' wide with the 3/8'' reset . Because of the reset will add support to the side wall. The manufacturer will try to add some beads down the center of the 5'' flat component that will make it stronger .Will back up the bead with spray foam. Will use that where the plywood come together on the sides. Will use 1/4 plywood on the outside 1/2 blue Foam covered with a light waterproof cloth . Will use some Alum around the door frame & windows that will tie to the trailer frame .That way I may not need studs. Hope the fiberglass component outer ring and the foam will take of most of the support.
I feel this system will work well over the long hall as this is the way U-Hall dose there trailers . The manufacturer stated that the profile was copy from a 1948 semi trailer cap that was made from hand formed steel .They make the trailers the same way today . If you think this is a bad plan please say so thank you!

Received a discourteous awaking to day. As I planed to use 4 by 10 foot down the side . With a 5'' piece of fiberglass molding at the side seam. So after calling around best price for 1/4 by 4 by 10' exterior was $75.36 + tax per sheet . Then told I have to drive 40 mi from there store to pick up . The first trailer maybe 8' 8'' long . 8 foot on the plywood & 8'' on the modular fiberglass component kit
Maybe I am asking for the wrong plywood?
Any thoughts of the wood I should use ?

Got pics of where you're going with this? Maybe finished photos from the guy that's selling the fiberglass? That'd help.

The manufacturer has sated that there not worth there time. As they have other markets for them.So there happy just selling a few over stock parts here and there.
As for pictures that to be on me .I am doing this for 3 reasons.
First as I have posted I get a free kit.
The second is we need more small trailers campers lots. BLM now thinks the best use of open land is to fence it in. lease it to bankers that plays at cow punching for a tax's write off. mining co. that can put you in jail for be being on the leased land.
If they see more tax money coming in from campers. Their will be more land open up for camping to the BLM it all about money. The few pieces I have played with.Take about ten minuets to put together a joint .So to me you could do a trailer fast.
If you have it planed out well . Less than 30 days. With a coping saw
last I have few tools and space to build.
On the Angib Wander . There is great plans here . Here's a picture of one of there adds

Had a few e-mails asking where I am at. I drove over to look at the $80.00 plywood it was 3 layers had voids in the center layer . Very big to me. I read so much on doing a woody. luna yes no inter exterior . This is how I feel :? I ask if I could get some 2'' fiberglass molding .Thinking I could run up and down at the doors so I could use 4 by 8 sheets and using there 5'' front to back for the seam four feet from the top. TFS. Sales person " This is there busiest time of the year so it be hard to fit in " . So maybe a piece of Alum. H turn on it's side for the plywood to fit in.At the doors.
