wooden wall options

Postby 5x8ntbuildlite » Tue May 26, 2015 11:00 pm

hello all, starting to think about walls on this here 5x8 nt build. so i believe ill do a 2x2 sill plate on the 1/2"ply deck and walls with 1/8 ply on inside, 1 1/2 ridged foam (with or without 2x2 studs?)then 1/8" ply like a sandwich with thin as possible cedar t&g or ship lap as an exterior. Or,, 1/8" ply 1 1/2 ridged then 1/2" nice fir ply as siding. knowing more on how they go will allow me to place the sill 2x2 in correct position for flushness. also seeing that the tear will only be a full sheet (4') in height i would like to maximize this space by building up from floor ply. thanks open to any feedback. strength, sheer, weight and finishing etc pros n cons

I think you're walls are overkill building with 2" studs. 3/4" is fine.

The best thing that ever happened to me with my first build, (and second and third) was to get a copy of Steve Fredrick's Teardrop Building Manual. Well worth the money. http://www.campingclassics.com/shopman05.html And no, I'm not associated with the product or the producer.

I see that some of the foamies use 1-1/2 rigid insulation with canvas skins. If you are using 1/8 inch ply inside and out then 3/4 inch foam is more than adequate for strength and insulation.

I used a sandwich of 1/4 inch ply inside, 3/4 inch framing and foam, and 1/4 inch shiplap cedar with 4 oz fiberglass and epoxy for the exterior. Glue it all up and the walls are amazingly strong.

Go with the cedar... you will love the look.
