Kreg pocket hole jig

Postby Tom Lashley » Sun Sep 27, 2015 1:09 pm

I have two things to post. I received a Kreg pocket hole jig for Christmas last year and was building a ramp for our dog this weekend and decided to try it out. I don't know how lived without it, works great for framing. Next is modern plywood from the big box stores, the thickness are all in strange sizes like 23/33. When I got a better look at this wood I realized the thickness is in metric mm. So you have to think in metric to use this plywood to get the right thickness, 3/4 in. framing ( 1 x 2 in. stock ) plus 1/4 ply you get 1 and 1/8 in. thickness not 1in.

I bought the Harbor Freight pocket hole jig and I'm very satisfied.

When I was making the cabinets for my ToyBox I use it a LOT. It's super simple to setup and makes good, solid joints.

I picked up a 3 part kit from Kreg, the pocket hole jig, a jig for drilling shelf pins and rip cut jig for my circular saw. The first 2 are awesome!!! the rig cut jig is okay. I need to give it another shot but this time with a much better blade on my saw and a better work table.

My wife loves wood working and discovered the Kreg pocket hole...she loves it. She uses it on everything.

I am beginning to think there is a cult of Kreg Jig people. They are going to try and join the world together with pocket holes.

Useful, but not for everything. Depends upon your joint, strength requirement, and time you want to put into it. "Strength" is a very complex issue because of the variety of wood orientations and the variety of stress forces and directions. I use them occasionally, but only where they will not be seen.

The concept known as the law of the instrument, Maslow's hammer, Maslow's gavel or a golden hammer is an over-reliance on a familiar tool; as Abraham Maslow said in 1966, "I suppose it is tempting, if the only tool you have is a hammer, to treat everything as if it were a nail."

I can highly recommend the Kreg style jig sold by Harbor Freight. It's all metal style is extremely durable. I just finished haloing 19 cabinet doors with #1 pine 1x 2 1/2.

I installed 152 1 1/4 screws in the frames in the 4 days I took to remodel Mom's kitchen. I did stick with the true Kreg screws as I didn't like the knock off substitutes but the HORRIBLE FREIGHT jig worked flawlessly.

I know it's totally off topic. But how about a picture of the finished kitchen cabinets?

I want to do something similar to my house. The cabinets inside my kitchen were built in 57 and are almost an identical style. If I wanted to replace them every single cabinet would have to be custom made which would put a kitchen remodel way out of my budget.
